Odisha-Karnataka Couple Hosts Purpose-Driven Wedding in Bhubaneswar
In a refreshing departure from conventional matrimonial celebrations, Subhashree Subhasmita from Odisha and Deepak Kumar N from Karnataka have opted for a wedding centered on social and environmental contributions rather than opulent festivities. The event, set in Bhubaneswar, featured no traditional band, baja (music), or grand baraat (wedding procession). Instead, it was marked by a blood donation camp, rows of saplings ready for planting, and piles of new clothes designated for distribution to the underprivileged.
Rejecting Caste, Horoscope, and Dowry Norms
The couple, who are set to marry on Sunday, have consciously moved beyond societal constraints such as jati (caste), jataka (horoscope), and jautuka (dowry). Subhashree, a 29-year-old horticulture officer, and Deepak, a 31-year-old scientist, will have their union solemnized not by priests but by sadhus and social activists at a local shelter home. This decision underscores their commitment to a meaningful ceremony that prioritizes humanitarian values over ritualistic traditions.
Blood Donation Camp for Thalassaemia Patients
The celebrations commenced on Saturday with a blood donation camp specifically organized for thalassaemia patients. The initiative garnered an enthusiastic response, with friends, family members, and intrigued local residents participating actively. Both the groom and the bride's father, Benudhar Senapati, contributed by donating blood. The couple collaborated with regional health organizations to ensure that the collected blood—totaling forty-five units—reaches thalassaemia patients who depend on regular transfusions for their well-being.
Charitable Clothing Donations and Environmental Efforts
In lieu of splurging on extravagant attire and jewelry, Subhashree and Deepak purchased new garments for destitute children and women residing at a city-based shelter home. "Instead of investing in lavish clothes and accessories, we decided to provide for those in genuine need," Subhashree explained. Additionally, the couple embraced an eco-friendly approach by planting saplings of medicinal and fruit-bearing plants on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, replacing the typical fireworks associated with wedding processions.
Oath for a Child Marriage-Free Society
The wedding ceremony will further include a collective oath taken by guests and residents, pledging support for a society free from child marriage. This component highlights the couple's dedication to addressing broader social issues through their personal milestone. "We wanted our marriage to signify something greater than just our union," Subhashree remarked, while Deepak added, "From the outset, we aimed for a celebration that minimizes waste and maximizes positive impact on society and the planet."
