Kashi Vishwanath Temple to Introduce Daily Evening Ganga Aarti at Lalita Ghat Starting March 19

The sacred Ganga River, which flows northward in Varanasi to touch the feet of Lord Vishwanath at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, will now be worshipped daily at the deity's doorstep with a new evening ritual. The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust has announced the launch of a daily evening Ganga Aarti at Lalita Ghat, commencing on March 19, 2025, the first day of Chaitra Navratri, which marks the beginning of the new Hindu calendar year.

Expanding Spiritual Offerings to Ease Crowding

This initiative follows the successful introduction of Ganga Aarti at Namo Ghat on September 17, 2025, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday. Temple CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra stated that the trust aims to provide more accessible spiritual experiences for devotees. The daily evening Ganga Aarti at Lalita Ghat is expected to help reduce the overwhelming crowd load currently experienced at the daily Ganga Aartis of Dashaswamedh Ghat, he explained.

The well-choreographed ritual will be performed by seven Acharyas (senior priests) daily, following the traditional lines of the Ganga Aartis conducted at Dashaswamedh, Sheetla (old Dashaswamedh), Assi, and Namo Ghats. Over the past three decades, daily Ganga Aartis have become a major global attraction, drawing devotees from across the world. However, the prime bathing ghats like Dashaswamedh often become overcrowded during these events, making it difficult for many to find space to witness the mesmerising ritual up close.

Significance of Lalita Ghat and Enhanced Access

Lalita Ghat holds particular spiritual significance, as it is named after one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, reflecting the form of Tripurasundari, the supreme goddess in Tantra Sadhana. This ghat provides direct access to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham through the Ganga Dwar and Bhairav Dwar, offering a convenient pathway for devotees. The new Aarti venue is strategically chosen to not only honour this divine connection but also to improve logistical flow for visitors.

In recent years, the introduction of Ganga Aarti at Assi and Namo Ghats has already started to attract large crowds, yet thousands of devotees still miss out on experiencing the spirituality and beauty of Kashi's ghats. The addition of Lalita Ghat aims to address this gap, providing an alternative site that combines historical reverence with modern accessibility.

Infrastructure and Cultural Impact

Namo Ghat, developed with support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands out with its unique design and multiple facilities, making it a popular site for both locals and tourists. Similarly, the new Aarti at Lalita Ghat is expected to enhance Varanasi's cultural landscape, offering a serene setting for evening worship. The temple trust's efforts reflect a broader trend of expanding religious services to accommodate growing pilgrim numbers while preserving the sanctity of ancient traditions.

As Varanasi continues to evolve as a spiritual hub, these initiatives ensure that the timeless ritual of Ganga Aarti remains accessible to all, fostering a deeper connection between devotees and the holy river. The daily evening Aarti at Lalita Ghat promises to be a significant addition to the city's rich tapestry of religious practices, starting this Chaitra Navratri.
