Delhi Village Development Board Sanctions Rs 55 Crore for Monumental Lord Ram Statue Project

NEW DELHI: In a significant cultural and developmental initiative, the Delhi Village Development Board has officially sanctioned a substantial budget of Rs 55 crore for the installation of a majestic 81-foot-high statue of Lord Ram. This monumental project is set to be established within the Hanuman Mandir Park located in Mangolpur Kalan, situated in the northwest region of Delhi. The ambitious endeavor aims to transform the park into a prominent cultural and spiritual landmark, enhancing the urban landscape and providing a focal point for community engagement and religious devotion.

Project Details and Financial Allocation

The comprehensive financial plan allocates Rs 50 crore specifically for the construction of the towering statue itself, with the remaining funds dedicated to ancillary development works. According to Raj Kumar Chauhan, the chairperson of the board, this decision was made in response to persistent public demand from residents across Delhi. "There was a strong and consistent demand for a large Ram statue from people in the area and from various other parts of Delhi. I personally received multiple requests, which led to the sanctioning of this project," Chauhan explained to The Times of India.

Architectural and Design Specifications

The statue will depict Lord Ram in a traditional blessing posture, standing gracefully on a lotus pedestal while holding a bow that rests gently on the ground. Inspired by classical artistic depictions, the design will incorporate traditional sculptural elements, including a radiant halo behind the head, symbolizing divinity and spiritual significance. The overall structure will reach an impressive height of approximately 100 feet, comprising:

  • An 81-foot statue mounted on a sturdy 10-foot base
  • An ornamental canopy extending over 6 feet
  • A reinforced RCC foundation for stability
  • A structural steel framework covered with durable bronze panels for both longevity and aesthetic appeal

Strategic Location and Visual Impact

The chosen location near the upcoming Mangolpur Kalan metro station is strategically selected to create a striking visual synergy. "Both the metro line and the statue will be visible to people from a single vantage point, offering a visual experience similar to the iconic Hanuman statue near Jhandewalan," Chauhan elaborated. This positioning is intended to enhance the skyline and provide a memorable sight for commuters and visitors alike, establishing a new cultural icon for the city.

Comprehensive Park Redevelopment Plan

Beyond the statue, the project encompasses a holistic redevelopment of the entire park area. The plan includes extensive landscaping, decorative lighting installations, improved pedestrian pathways, comfortable seating areas, and enhanced visitor facilities. "The park will be meticulously landscaped and illuminated to ensure maximum convenience and comfort for all visitors," Chauhan affirmed. This transformation aims to create not only a spiritual destination but also a vibrant community recreation space that fosters social interaction and cultural activities.

Construction Timeline and Implementation Strategy

Department estimates indicate that the construction process will require approximately 18 months, commencing from the award of work scheduled around March. To ensure timely and efficient execution, officials have been directed to expedite the tendering process. "We will invite agencies with prior experience in similar large-scale sculptural and construction projects to ensure quality and adherence to traditional aesthetics," Chauhan stated, emphasizing the importance of expertise in delivering a project of this magnitude.

Broader Developmental and Symbolic Context

Chauhan highlighted that this initiative aligns with and strengthens Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for comprehensive rural and urban development. "Lord Ram symbolizes core values such as courage, righteousness, sacrifice, and ideal leadership. This project embodies these principles while contributing to community development," he remarked. The statue project is part of a larger set of 574 rural development works approved by the board during its recent meeting, covering essential infrastructure like roads, parks, drainage systems, and community spaces across Delhi's villages and rural pockets.

The existing Hanuman temple within the park will be integrated into the redeveloped landscape, creating a harmonious religious complex. This project represents a significant step in enhancing Delhi's cultural infrastructure, providing a new landmark that blends spiritual significance with public utility and aesthetic grandeur.
