Tamil Nadu's First 2026 Jallikattu: 600 Bulls, 300 Tamers Set for Pudukottai
First 2026 Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu on Jan 3

The traditional fervour of Pongal will roar to life in Tamil Nadu with the state's first organised Jallikattu event of the 2026 season. The spectacle is scheduled for January 3 at Thatchankurichi village in the Pudukottai district.

Massive Participation and High Stakes

Organisers anticipate a grand scale for this cultural event. They expect around 600 bulls from the districts of Trichy, Sivaganga, and Madurai to participate. Furthermore, approximately 300 bull tamers from central and southern districts are likely to register for the chance to prove their valour. Adding to the competitive spirit, the organisers have announced a significant reward: a two-wheeler will be awarded to the best-performing bull tamer.

Rigorous Safety Preparations Underway

Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of both participants and spectators. Pudukottai District Collector M Aruna personally inspected the vaadivaasal (entry point) arena and the spectator galleries ahead of the event. A key focus of the review was the bull exit point from the vaadivaasal, which officials have identified as a vulnerable area for potential injuries.

Comprehensive medical arrangements have been mandated:

  • The public health department will deploy medical teams at the venue to provide immediate first aid.
  • Ambulances will be stationed on-site to swiftly transport critically injured persons to government medical college hospitals in Thanjavur and Pudukottai.
  • Veterinarians from the animal husbandry department will also be present on duty to attend to the bulls.

Community Event with Wide Appeal

The event is being orchestrated by the Don Bosco Youth Centre of St Mary's Church, Thatchankurichi. It is set to draw a large crowd, with an estimated 5,000 spectators expected to attend and witness this ancient sport. This Jallikattu marks the official commencement of the 2026 Pongal season's traditional events, blending cultural heritage with community celebration and stringent modern safety protocols.
