Stalls are brimming with traditional gulals, water guns, masks, balloons, and themed shirts, catering to children, youth, and families who are gearing up for the joyous festival.
Slower Business Trends Amid Festive Preparations
Despite the lively and colorful displays, sellers across Guwahati are expressing concerns over business being slower than anticipated so far. Many shopkeepers have noted that footfall in the markets has been moderate, with customers often browsing but hesitating to make purchases. Pinak Das, a shopkeeper operating in the bustling Fancy Bazar area, shared his experience: "I have only managed to sell items worth Rs 5,000 up to now, while my inventory holds goods valued at Rs 80,000. Typically, people flock to the markets during the final hours leading up to the festival. There is still hope for a significant boost in sales as Holi approaches."
Shifting Consumer Preferences and Market Dynamics
Dabloo Sarkar, a vendor based in Paltan Bazar, highlighted a notable shift in buying patterns: "Customers are increasingly leaning towards purchasing herbal colors, with many specifically requesting skin-safe and chemical-free products. Apart from these eco-friendly options, other items have seen minimal sales at this stage." Meanwhile, sweet shops have begun witnessing a gradual uptick in the sale of traditional sweets and snacks, although bulk purchases remain limited, indicating a cautious approach from buyers.
Residents Opt for Low-Key Celebrations Due to Practical Challenges
Residents of Guwahati are planning subdued Holi celebrations this year, citing various practical obstacles. Rabindra Nandi, a resident of Lalganesh, explained: "Ongoing construction work across multiple areas has severely disrupted daily movement and reduced available open spaces. Issues like dust, traffic diversions, and blocked lanes have made it inconvenient to organize large street gatherings or elaborate celebrations." Parents are favoring small, controlled festivities within housing societies or homes, with safety concerns also playing a role in keeping celebrations simple and intimate.
Youth Embrace Minimalist Festive Spirit
Youngsters in the city are redefining Holi celebrations by focusing on togetherness rather than extravagance. Rudipta Nath, a university student, emphasized: "We prefer minimal arrangements because the essence of Holi lies in enjoying each other's company rather than spending excessively on grand setups." This sentiment reflects a broader trend towards more meaningful and community-oriented festivities.
