Haridwar Authorities Intensify Preparations for Char Dham Yatra
In Haridwar, local authorities have significantly escalated their preparations for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra, which is scheduled to commence on April 19. This heightened focus comes as persistent concerns loom over effective crowd management, particularly with the anticipated surge of pilgrims during the Baisakhi festivities on Monday.
Enhanced Facilities and Registration Processes
To streamline the pilgrimage experience, officials have established 20 dedicated counters at the Rishikul Ground. These counters will facilitate offline registration for the yatra, with operations set to begin on April 17. Basic amenities, including toilets, drinking water stations, and seating arrangements, have been meticulously put in place to cater to the needs of the devotees.
District tourism officer Sushil Nautiyal provided insights into the registration trends, stating, "Online registration for the yatra was initiated on March 6, and we have already recorded over 15 lakh pilgrim registrations to date." This substantial number underscores the massive scale of the event and the critical need for robust logistical support.
Administrative and Sanitation Measures
In a bid to improve urban cleanliness, Mayor Kiran Jaissal announced an increase in the workforce of sanitation personnel, known as 'paryavaran mitras'. The number has been raised from 600 to 700, with supervisors deployed across all 60 wards of the city to oversee and coordinate the arrangements.
For more efficient management, the mela area has been strategically divided into 10 zones and 33 sectors. Each sector is under the supervision of designated magistrates to ensure orderly conduct. District magistrate Mayur Dixit and SSP Navneet Singh elaborated on the comprehensive traffic plan that has been devised, complemented by the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations to enhance security and monitoring.
Persistent Concerns and Criticisms
Despite these efforts, residents and local stakeholders have voiced significant apprehensions regarding the city's preparedness. They highlight potential gaps, especially with the expected influx of pilgrims during Baisakhi, questioning the claims of improved sanitation and infrastructure.
Saurabh Budhkar, priest of Ganga Mandir at Har-ki-Pauri, expressed his concerns, saying, "Much remains to be done considering the large congregation expected. The Har-ki-Pauri and Subhash Ghat areas are overcrowded and unclean. Encroachments return soon after being removed. A major concern is the presence of beggars and petty thieves."
Echoing these sentiments, Brijendra Harsh, a local resident, pointed out deficiencies in essential facilities. He noted, "Parking, clean toilets, and drinking water facilities are lacking in many parts of the city. There are also limited affordable eating options for pilgrims." These criticisms underscore the challenges that authorities must address to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage experience for all attendees.
