Jain Monk's Historical Claim Ignites Major Controversy in Kolhapur

A statement made by Jain monk Acharya Nayan Padmasagar regarding "a Jain queen" defeating Mughal emperor Aurangzeb has erupted into a significant historical controversy, with the comment being broadly interpreted as a reference to the legendary Maratha queen Maharani Tarabai.

Historians Dismiss Assertion as Baseless

Prominent historians, political figures, and Maratha organizations have uniformly rejected the monk's assertion, labeling it as historically inaccurate. The monk allegedly made these remarks while addressing a Mahavir Jayanti event in Mumbai earlier this week.

Historian Indrajit Sawant strongly criticized the claim, describing it as "baseless" and pointing to well-documented records of Tarabai's lineage. "She was the daughter of renowned Maratha commander Hambirrao Mohite and the daughter-in-law of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," Sawant stated emphatically.

"There is nothing to debate about which community she came from. The Jain monk appears to have little or no knowledge of Maratha history," Sawant added. He further emphasized that while admiring historical figures is acceptable, presenting incorrect history is completely unfair. "The Jain community is known to be peace-loving, and its leaders should exercise restraint while speaking about historical personalities."

Political and Community Backlash

Opposition politicians and several Maratha outfits have joined the chorus of criticism, accusing the monk of twisting historical facts and attempting to "appropriate Maratha icons." Former MP Raju Shetti, who himself belongs to the Jain community, expressed his disapproval.

"Maharani Tarabai was the founder of the Karvir Sansthan. She was born to Hambirrao Mohite, a general in Shivaji Maharaj's army, from Talbeed near Karad in Satara district," Shetti clarified. "The religious leader should have verified facts that are well known before making such a statement. Religious leaders should focus on guiding people, not creating social discord through inaccurate claims about historical figures."

Royal Family Condemns Remarks

Members of Kolhapur's royal family have also strongly condemned the monk's remarks. Shahu Chhatrapati, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, and Malojiraje Chhatrapati have all voiced their objections and demanded an apology for what they perceive as a distortion of their heritage and historical legacy.

The controversy highlights the sensitive nature of historical narratives in India, where claims about historical figures can quickly escalate into broader social and political debates. The incident underscores the importance of accurate historical scholarship and the potential consequences when religious or community leaders make unverified assertions about the past.

As the debate continues, many are calling for greater caution and verification before making public statements about historical events and personalities, particularly those involving revered figures from India's rich and complex history.
