Kolkata's 'Adishakti' Kathak Recital Explores Shiva-Parvati Divine Bond
Kathak Performance 'Adishakti' Enthralls Kolkata Audience

The cultural hub of Kolkata experienced an enchanting evening of classical dance as the city hosted a spectacular Kathak performance titled 'Adishakti' on Friday, November 21. The event took place at the prestigious ICCR Ho Chi Minh Society located on Camac Street, drawing classical art enthusiasts from across the city.

A Divine Narrative Through Dance

The production 'Adishakti' presented a narrative-based Kathak recital that delved deep into the divine relationship between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, while also exploring the cosmic significance of Naad Bindu. The performance successfully blended traditional Kathak elements with contemporary storytelling approaches, creating a unique artistic experience for the audience.

The evening began with a serene and devotional atmosphere, carefully crafted through strategic stage props that symbolized the awakening of Shakti and devotion toward Shiva's cosmic power. The opening piece, Dhrupad Shiva Shiva Shambo Bholenath Adi Mahadeva, set the spiritual tone for the entire performance.

Rhythmic Mastery and Technical Brilliance

Following the opening piece, the performance moved into Damru Har Kar Baje, which artistically illustrated the profound connection between the sound of Shiva's damru, the human heartbeat, and the primordial Naad created by Shiva during his Tandav Nritya. The recital demonstrated exceptional technical proficiency by seamlessly integrating complex rhythmic patterns using the 14-beat Dhaamat Taal through sophisticated Kathak compositions.

The final segment of the performance beautifully depicted the tender union of Shiva and Parvati. Through expressive gestures and precise footwork, the artist masterfully showcased how Parvati's devotion perfectly complements Shiva's deep meditation. This was particularly evident in the piece Darshan Debo Shankara Mahadeva, which left a lasting impression on the audience.

The Artist Behind the Performance

The talented performer, who serves as the director of Sanjog Academy of Performing Arts in both Bangalore and Pune, is an empanelled artist with ICCR. Her credentials include representing Kathak on international platforms, with notable performances in Germany sponsored by both ICCR and the Ministry of Defence.

Adding to her impressive portfolio, the artist is also empanelled with Doordarshan and SPICMACAY. The event was organized by ICCR Kolkata as part of its Horizon Series, which continues to offer audiences exceptional evenings of classical dance marked by technical mastery and expressive storytelling. The series has established itself as a significant platform for promoting Indian classical arts in Eastern India.
