Uttarakhand's Khadi and Baithki Holi Brings Hill Heritage to Lucknow

The Uttarakhand Mahaparishad organized a lively celebration of Khadi (standing) and Baithki (sitting) Holi in Lucknow on Sunday, transforming the city into a vibrant display of colors, rhythm, and tradition. This event successfully revived the rich folk heritage of the hills right in the urban heart of Lucknow.

A Colorful Gathering of Tradition and Joy

Men and women gathered in large numbers, their faces adorned with vibrant gulaal in various shades, creating a riot of colors that captured the essence of Holi. The celebration commenced with Baithki Holi, where participants sat in a circle and sang traditional folk songs. These included melodious tunes such as ‘Jogi aayo sheher mein vyapari', ‘Shiv ke man maa hi base Kashi', ‘Rang mein Holi kaise khelungi sanwariya ke sang', and ‘Aao mori sajni, Holi khelen'.

The soulful ambience was enhanced by the harmonious sounds of musical instruments like the harmonium, tabla, nagada, dhol, flute, and dholak. Elders led the verses, with youngsters enthusiastically joining in the chorus, fostering an intergenerational connection through music.

Transition to Khadi Holi and Festive Spirit

As the tempo of the music increased, the mood shifted to Khadi Holi. Participants stood up, forming circles, clapping rhythmically, and swaying gracefully to folk tunes. Laughter echoed across the venue as friends playfully applied color to each other and shared warm embraces, embodying the festive spirit of Holi.

Bharat Singh, a senior member of the Uttarakhand Mahaparishad, expressed his joy, saying, "It feels like we brought a piece of Uttarakhand here." Rajesh Bisht, secretary of the organization, emphasized the cultural significance, stating, "Khadi and Baithki Holi are not just festivals; they are emotions rooted in our culture."

Women's Participation and Cultural Belonging

Women participants highlighted how the event provided a deep sense of belonging. Usha Bisht, with her face streaked with color, shared, "The songs remind us of our villages and childhood celebrations. It's heartening to see the younger generation taking interest." This sentiment underscored the event's role in preserving and passing down cultural traditions.

Traditional Delicacies and Group Dances

To conclude the celebration, everyone was served authentic Uttarakhandi delicacies, including:

  • Aloo ke gutke
