Kinnar Akhara Saints Mark Basant Panchami with Sacred Sangam Bath in Prayagraj
In a significant religious observance, seers and saints affiliated with the Kinnar Akhara, accompanied by a substantial gathering of their disciples, performed ritual bathing at the sacred Sangam confluence in Prayagraj on Friday, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami. The event saw participation from spiritual leaders and followers who gathered to honor the festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.
Spiritual Leader Offers Prayers and Raises Concerns
Mahamandaleshwar and state president of the akhara, Swami Kalyani Nand Giri, popularly known as Chhoti Maa, led the ceremonies by offering heartfelt prayers to Maa Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati, invoking blessings for the welfare and prosperity of all devotees. Emphasizing the spiritual significance of the day, she stated, "Basant Panchami is the day to worship Goddess Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati bestows knowledge and wisdom upon everyone."
However, the spiritual leader also voiced practical concerns regarding the arrangements during the bathing festival. She highlighted that participants had to walk approximately 5 kilometers to reach the Sangam due to traffic restrictions imposed by authorities. In response, Chhoti Maa demanded better infrastructure and logistical support to facilitate smoother access for devotees in future events.
Appeal for Cooperation and Devotional Activities
Swami Kalyani Nand Giri appealed to all devotees to cooperate with the mela administration to ensure a harmonious and safe experience. She urged, "They should take a bath at the ghats only after following the rules and protocols laid down by the administration. This will be convenient for the devotees." Her call for adherence to guidelines underscores the importance of maintaining order during large-scale religious gatherings.
Adding to the devotional fervor, Chhoti Maa, along with her disciples, sang a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the occasion. This musical offering reflected the deep-rooted traditions and cultural practices associated with the festival.
Kalpavas Observance and Future Plans
More than 200 Kinnar saints from various parts of the country are currently observing Kalpavas, a period of religious austerity, at the ongoing Magh Mela in Prayagraj. Their camp has been a hub of spiritual activities, with various cultural and religious programs being organized to engage participants and promote devotional practices.
Looking ahead, Giri announced that the akhara members plan to depart from the mela only after participating in the Mahashivratri snan, indicating their commitment to completing the full cycle of religious observances. This extended stay highlights the dedication of the Kinnar Akhara community to their spiritual rituals and traditions.
