Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025 Concludes After Record-Breaking Run

The sixth edition of the internationally acclaimed Kochi-Muziris Biennale, titled "For the Time Being", officially drew to a close on Tuesday, marking the end of a spectacular 110-day celebration of contemporary art. The event, which captivated artists, curators, and art enthusiasts from across the globe, recorded an impressive overall footfall of nearly 6.6 lakh visitors, solidifying its status as a premier cultural platform.

A Grand Finale at Aspinwall House

The closing ceremony was held at the biennale's central hub, Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi, where curator Nikhil Chopra performed the symbolic lowering of the ceremonial flag. This act brought the curtains down on months of intense artistic exchange and vibrant public engagement. Chopra, visibly moved, expressed his profound gratitude, stating, "I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I leave with enduring memories, deep friendships and collaborations. This journey has changed me; I am not the same person I was three months ago. Kochi has opened doors and taken me to places I never imagined."

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including writer N S Madhavan, former mayor K J Sohan, Kochi Biennale Foundation CEO Thomas Varghese, and programme director Mario D'Souza.

Expansive Artistic Showcase and Venues

Curated by artist Nikhil Chopra in collaboration with HH Art Spaces, the biennale opened on December 12, 2025, and unfolded across an extensive network of 29 venues spanning Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island, and Ernakulam. The event featured a diverse array of 66 artist projects from over 25 countries, with participation from artists representing approximately 30 nations.

Built around the core themes of "friendship economies" and shared practices, this edition placed a strong emphasis on:

  • Collaboration between artists and communities
  • Active community engagement and dialogue
  • Collective artistic processes and creative exchanges

Parallel Programs and Educational Initiatives

The biennale's impact was amplified through several parallel exhibitions organized by the Kochi Biennale Foundation, including the Students' Biennale, Edam, Invitations, and various collateral shows, all of which attracted substantial audiences.

A particularly successful initiative was the ABC (Art By Children) Art Room, which saw widespread participation across different age groups and educational institutions. The program's achievements included:

  1. Participation from 25 schools and 10 colleges in workshops, directly engaging around 3,800 students.
  2. A total of 149 workshops held across two Art Rooms, involving approximately 6,000 participants directly.
  3. An additional 18 outreach workshops reaching another 600 participants.
  4. Performances and film screenings that attracted around 3,500 viewers.
  5. An estimated 10,000 children actively engaging with the Art Rooms throughout the biennale period.

Foundation Leadership and Future Announcements

Biennale foundation chairperson Venu V highlighted the edition's success in reaffirming the event's evolving role in shaping cultural dialogue and fostering community engagement. He remarked, "This edition demonstrated that contemporary art can thrive through collaboration and community participation. The friendships, conversations and creative processes that emerged over the past 110 days will continue to resonate beyond the closing date. Kochi once again proved that a people-centric model can create a globally significant cultural platform."

In an exciting announcement for the future, Venu V confirmed that the next edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is scheduled to open on December 12, 2027, promising another chapter in this dynamic cultural journey.
