Kodagu's Grand Republic Day Fruit & Flower Show at Raja Seat from Jan 24

The horticulture department of Kodagu district, in a collaborative effort with the district administration and zilla panchayat, has organized a magnificent fruit and flower show at Raja Seat in Madikeri. This vibrant event is scheduled to run from January 24 to January 26, 2024, in connection with the Republic Day celebrations, offering a visual feast for residents and visitors alike.

Floral Extravaganza with Thousands of Blooms

According to Kodagu Deputy Commissioner SJ Somashekhar, approximately 20,000 flowers of various species have been meticulously grown and arranged across Raja Seat. These blooms are displayed in about 8,000 pots and flower beds, creating a stunning landscape. The varieties include salvia, sevantige (chrysanthemum), chandu hu, genia, dianthus, impatiens, Vinca rosea, cox's comb, dahlia, and many others, showcasing the region's horticultural diversity.

Key Attractions and Floral Artworks

A major highlight of the show is a floral replica of Kodagu's famous Sri Bhagandeshwara Temple. This impressive structure measures 33 feet in height, 18 feet in length, and 23 feet in width, and is decorated using roses, sevanthige, and aster in different colors, adding a cultural touch to the event.

In total, 16 types of floral artworks will be created, utilizing an estimated 8 to 10 lakh sevantige flowers, along with orchids, desi, and other flowers. These installations include:

  • Musical-themed designs such as tabla, piano, and harp in specified dimensions, adorned with the same flower varieties.
  • An 8-foot Amar Jawan artwork, constructed and decorated with multi-colored flowers as part of Republic Day themed displays.
  • Additional floral installations like a flying bird, fish, butterfly, flower bear, and heart-shaped artwork, enhancing the visual appeal.

Inauguration and Stalls

The show will be inaugurated by NS Boseraju, Kodagu district minister, in the presence of district MLAs and other dignitaries. About 60 stalls are being set up at Gandhi Maidan, including:

  • 10 stalls reserved for departments such as horticulture, coffee board, agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, Hopcoms, industry, and commerce.
  • 50 stalls for nursery plant sales, farm implements, and machinery, providing a platform for local businesses and farmers.

Exhibits and Competitions

Farmers' specialty fruits, vegetables, garden crops, and samba crops will be showcased, with prizes awarded for the best exhibits. Exhibits can be submitted and registered at the horticulture department from January 23, encouraging participation from the agricultural community.

For the general public and women, competitions will be held at Raja Seat Park, including:

These activities aim to engage the community and celebrate creativity during the Republic Day festivities.
