Ishita Paul, who attends terrace music nights in Kolkata, says “People are tired of very commercial nightlife spaces. Terrace events feel more curated, creative and relaxed.” To which, Aishwariya Sarkar, entrepreneur, added: “Terrace events have a very Kolkata feeling to them. They remind me of childhood evenings spent on rooftops, except now they've become spaces for music, food and culture.”
While rooftop events are gaining popularity across Kolkata, organisers say the format comes with its own set of challenges. In Kolkata, rooftops already carry a lot of memories – adda, family gatherings, and the winter sun. Terrace events bring back nostalgia while also giving people an escape from everyday city life. “Terrace events feel more authentic because they're usually smaller and community-driven. You end up discovering new artistes, food pop-ups and people with similar interests,” says Sneha Agarwal, who frequently attends creative rooftop pop-ups.
The trend reflects a broader shift towards personalised, low-key social experiences that prioritise connection over consumption. As the city's urban fabric grows denser, rooftops offer a rare commodity: space to breathe, create and commune. Whether it's a Sunday afternoon poetry reading or a Friday night acoustic set, these elevated venues are redefining what it means to go out in Kolkata.
