Lucknow's First Bada Mangal on Tuesday Kicks Off Annual Hanuman Festival

Lucknow is set to celebrate the first Bada Mangal on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the annual festival dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Temples across the city are beautifully decorated for the occasion.

Significance of Bada Mangal in 2025

Bada Mangal is observed every Tuesday of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. This year, the festival holds special significance due to the presence of Adhik Maas, an extra lunar month. Priests and astrologers explain that this unusual calendar alignment has extended Jyeshtha to 59 days, resulting in eight Tuesdays instead of the usual four or five. The festivities will continue until June 23.

Cultural Importance and Traditions

Considered unique to Lucknow, Bada Mangal reflects the city's Ganga-Jamuni culture. The observance includes community feasts, devotional programs, and special prayers. Long queues are expected on roadsides as volunteers distribute food and drinks throughout the day. Devotees throng temples to offer prayers and seek blessings.

Historical Background

The tradition is believed to date back to the 18th century, originating from the Hanuman temple in Aliganj. This temple is associated with Begum Alia, wife of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula. According to local lore, she dreamt of Lord Hanuman instructing her to build a temple at a specific site. Later, an idol was discovered there, and when an elephant carrying it refused to move, that spot was chosen for the shrine.

Logistical Arrangements

Amid an LPG shortage, district officials have announced that registered bhandaras (community kitchens) will receive priority cylinder supply to ensure smooth conduct of the festivities.
