Coimbatore man arrested for murder of senior citizen

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on charges of murdering an unidentified senior citizen near the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday. The accused, identified as G Rajesh, a daily wage earner originally from Thanjavur who currently resides in Coimbatore, allegedly killed a man aged around 65 by crushing his head with a heavy stone, according to police.

Discovery of the Body

The incident came to light when M Rajadurai, a 22-year-old ambulance driver, discovered the victim unconscious with severe head injuries near the mortuary gate of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Police arrived at the scene and found a blood-stained paver block beside the body. The victim was shifted to the hospital for postmortem examination.

Investigation and Arrest

Police identified the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage from the area. The footage showed Rajesh approaching the senior citizen, who was sleeping on the roadside, punching him in the face, and then attacking him with a heavy stone. The footage also captured Rajesh sleeping beside the body for several hours before leaving the scene the next morning. Based on this evidence, police arrested Rajesh.

Motive and Background

During interrogation, Rajesh told police that he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and did not intend to commit murder. However, police revealed that Rajesh is a repeat offender and was previously booked in a murder case in 2019. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the victim and determine any further details about the case.
