Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday urged the Karnataka government to appoint an agriculture minister at the earliest, stating that the state's farming community needs immediate attention. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Joshi emphasized the urgency of filling the vacancy, which has been pending for several weeks.
Joshi dismisses personal interest in the post
When asked about speculation that he might be interested in the agriculture portfolio himself, Joshi categorically denied any such ambition. 'Our party leadership has not said so, nor have I expressed any such interest. Therefore, I do not wish to respond to that question,' he said, making it clear that his demand was purely in the interest of farmers.
Background of the vacancy
The position of agriculture minister in Karnataka has been vacant since the previous minister resigned last month following a controversy over fertilizer distribution. The Congress-led state government, headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has faced criticism from opposition parties for the delay in filling key portfolios. Joshi, a senior BJP leader from Karnataka, has been vocal about the need for a dedicated minister to address issues such as monsoon preparedness, crop insurance, and market access for farmers.
According to sources, the delay has affected the implementation of several central schemes in the state, including the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. 'Over 2.5 crore farmers in Karnataka are waiting for decisive action. The government cannot afford to keep this portfolio vacant,' Joshi added.
Political implications
The demand comes amid heightened political activity in Karnataka, with both the ruling Congress and opposition BJP gearing up for the next assembly elections. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who also holds the irrigation portfolio, has been handling additional responsibilities but has not been officially assigned agriculture. Joshi's remarks are seen as a move to corner the government on its governance priorities.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has not yet announced a timeline for the appointment. A senior official from the Chief Minister's Office stated that the matter is under consideration and a decision will be taken soon.
