Madurai Jallikattu: Over 15,000 Bulls Registered Online

The online registration process for bulls and their tamers for the highly anticipated Jallikattu events in Madurai district concluded on Thursday at 5 pm, revealing a remarkable surge in participation. The portal, which opened on Wednesday evening, witnessed a frenzy of activity, amassing approximately 15,000 registrations within a mere 24-hour window.

Record-Breaking Numbers for 2025 Events

Officials confirmed that the final tally for bull registrations reached 15,047, marking a substantial increase of 2,415 bulls compared to the previous year. The venue-wise breakdown for this year is as follows: 3,090 bulls for Avaniapuram, 5,747 for Palamedu, and 6,210 for Alanganallur. In 2024, the total stood at 12,632 bulls, with 2,026 from Avaniapuram, 4,820 from Palamedu, and 5,786 from Alanganallur.

Similarly, registrations for bull tamers have also seen a notable rise. A total of 5,234 tamers signed up online this year, which is 735 more than last year's count of 4,499. The distribution shows 1,849 tamers from Avaniapuram, 1,913 from Palamedu, and 1,472 from Alanganallur. In 2024, the figures were 1,735, 1,914, and 850 respectively.

Streamlined Process and Stringent Safety Checks

Authorities implemented separate online application forms for bull owners and tamers, making registration mandatory in strict adherence to safety protocols. The digital system was designed to simplify verification, eliminate last-minute crowding at venues, and guarantee transparency in participant selection.

For bull registration, owners had to provide comprehensive details including personal information, Aadhaar number, and contact details. Crucial data about the bull—such as its breed, age, horn length, colour, identification marks—along with a valid veterinary medical fitness certificate were mandatory uploads. Bull tamers were required to submit personal details, identity proof, and their own medical fitness certificates.

Officials emphasized strict medical disqualifications. Tamers with recent injuries, surgical scars, or a history of recent surgery were barred. Applicants found to be hypertensive during medical examinations were also ruled out. On the event day, alcohol consumption will be tested using analysers, and anyone found under the influence will be immediately barred from participating.

Positive Feedback and Preparations in Full Swing

R Karthick, a bull tamer from Alagar Koil, praised the new online system, noting that it has effectively reduced the overcrowding and confusion that were common in the past. Meanwhile, extensive preparatory works are underway at all venues. This includes the installation of barricades, spectator galleries, LED screens, drinking water facilities, and mobile toilets.

In a significant highlight, Chief Minister M K Stalin is expected to attend the Palamedu Jallikattu on January 16 and the Alanganallur event on January 17, underscoring the cultural and political importance of these traditional games in Tamil Nadu.
