Mahashivaratri Celebrations Draw Massive Crowds to MM Hills Temple Complex
The Male Mahadeshwara Temple, situated atop MM Hills in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district, experienced an extraordinary influx of devotees on Sunday as lakhs congregated to observe Mahashivaratri with profound religious devotion. Special pujas and rituals commenced in the early morning hours, allowing devotees to participate in darshan by dawn. The sacred ceremonies continued uninterrupted until Monday morning as part of the annual Mahashivaratri Jatra Mahotsava, which is scheduled to conclude on February 18.
Enhanced Security Protocols Implemented for Pilgrim Safety
MM Hills, recognized as a major pilgrim center, consistently attracts substantial footfall during this significant festival. In response to the anticipated large turnout and recent safety apprehensions—stemming from a leopard attack on a devotee from Mandya district during a padayatra—the district administration and forest department instituted rigorous security measures along the 8-kilometer padayatra stretch from Talabetta to the hill shrine.
To ensure the safety of all participants, seven dedicated security teams were strategically deployed along the route, with one team assigned to each kilometer. Each unit comprised five personnel, including representatives from the police department, anti-poaching camps, and home guards, all operating under the direct supervision of range forest officers. These teams were equipped with an array of tools, including guns, walkie-talkies, torchlights, crackers, machetes, and lathis.
Additional patrol units, led by the deputy range forest officer and forest guards, conducted continuous monitoring of the stretch using vehicles. Furthermore, the Leopard Task Force from Mysuru and drone surveillance units have significantly intensified their vigilance efforts. MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary DCF B Bhaskar reported that on the first day of the four-day jatra, all activities proceeded smoothly without any untoward incidents.
Widespread Devotional Activities Across Mysuru Region
Concurrently, thousands of devotees offered prayers at the Sri Srikanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud, contributing to the region's spiritual ambiance. In Mysuru city, the Sri Trineshwaraswamy Temple attracted large crowds, with the presiding deity adorned with an impressive 11-kilogram golden mask, adding to the festive grandeur.
The Sri Vidyanatheshwara Temple in Talakadu, located within Mysuru district, also experienced a substantial influx of devotees throughout the day. Major temples across the city witnessed a massive surge of worshippers from the early morning hours. Notable sites included the 101 Shivalingas at Gurukula on Ramanuja Road, the Chandramouleshwara Temple, the Amruteshwara Temple, and the Kameshwara–Kameshwari Temple, all of which reported heavy footfall.
Similarly, Shiva temples in Srirampura, such as the Mahalingeshwara Temple in Preethi Layout, were thronged by devotees since morning, reflecting the widespread participation in the Mahashivaratri observances across the region.
