International Mahashivratri Festival 2026 Kicks Off in Mandi with Traditional Splendor
Amidst an atmosphere of deep religious devotion and vibrant cultural traditions, the seven-day International Mahashivratri Festival Mandi–2026 officially began on Monday. The grand inauguration featured the first traditional Jaleb procession of Shri Raj Madhav Rai, the presiding deity of Mandi district, along with the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag at the historic Paddal Ground.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri Leads Celebrations
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri graced the occasion as the chief guest, marking a significant moment in the festival's history. He released a special logo commemorating 500 years of Mandi town, inaugurated exhibitions set up by various government departments, and unveiled the fair committee's souvenir. Agnihotri actively participated in the traditional first Jaleb of Shri Raj Madhav Rai, following his prayers at the Madhav Rai Temple earlier in the day.
Thousands of devotees, adorned in traditional attire, joined the magnificent procession from the temple to Paddal Ground. They danced joyfully alongside their local deities, with reports indicating that over 200 deities have already arrived in Mandi to partake in this year's festivities. The deputy chief minister also took part in the pagri (turban) ceremony and extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh and Mandi district during the inaugural function.
Cultural Significance and Historical Legacy
In his address, Agnihotri emphasized that Mandi's 500-year history reflects its rich heritage, describing the International Mahashivratri Festival as more than just a celebration. He stated it is a profound symbol of divine culture, folk faith, and collective identity for the region. He credited former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh for his efforts in securing international recognition for the Mandi Shivratri and Kullu Dussehra fairs, which have elevated their global stature and made them a defining cultural identity of Himachal Pradesh today.
Agnihotri highlighted that foreign artists now regularly participate in these festivals, showcasing their international appeal. He praised the people of Mandi for preserving this tradition of divine congregation for centuries, ensuring its continuity and vibrancy.
Political Commentary on Federal Issues
On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Agnihotri addressed pressing political concerns, stating that the discontinuation of the revenue deficit grant (RDG) and GST compensation is inappropriate and goes against the federal structure of India. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and restore Himachal Pradesh's rightful financial dues. Agnihotri assured that despite these challenges, salaries, pensions, and the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) would not be halted, and development works would continue unabated in the state.
Innovations and Festival Details
Earlier in the event, Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the Fair Organising Committee, Apoorv Devgan, welcomed all attendees and shared exciting updates for this year's festival. For the first time, special pagoda-style Dev Sthals (sacred spaces) have been prepared for the deities, designed to better reflect the dignity and sanctity of the divine tradition. Devgan also detailed the various programs and activities scheduled throughout the Mahashivratri Festival, promising a week filled with spiritual and cultural enrichment.
The International Mahashivratri Festival Mandi–2026 stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Mandi's cultural heritage, blending ancient rituals with contemporary celebrations to create a unique and unforgettable experience for all participants.
