Mangaluru's Infant Jesus Shrine Launches 40-Hour Eucharistic Adoration for Global Peace
The Infant Jesus Shrine in Bikarnakatte, Mangaluru, initiated its annual 40 hours of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration at 6 am on Tuesday, with a profound focus on praying for peace across the world. This spiritual endeavor takes on added significance against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in West Asia, offering a beacon of hope and unity.
16th Year of a Cherished Tradition
This year marks the 16th consecutive year of this revered tradition at the shrine, which continues to attract large numbers of devotees annually. The event not only features Eucharistic Adoration but also provides the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession), enabling participants to engage in spiritual renewal and reflection.
Inaugural Ceremony and Biblical Insights
The adoration commenced with a Holy Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr Melvin D'Cunha, superior of St Joseph's Monastery. In his homily, Fr John Pinto elaborated on the biblical importance of the number 40, explaining that it symbolizes preparation for a greater mission. He referenced the 40 years of the Israelites in the desert, Jesus' 40 days of fasting before his public ministry, and the traditional understanding of Christ's time in the tomb.
Fr Pinto emphasized that the 40 hours of adoration serve as a fitting response to the 40 days of Lent, which are dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Fr Stifan Perera, director of the shrine, expressed gratitude to the devotees present and encouraged the faithful to spend meaningful time in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord.
Diverse Prayer Formats and Community Involvement
Following the mass, the Blessed Sacrament was exposed for adoration, with various groups leading the sessions using different prayer formats. The adoration began with the Carmelite brothers of St Joseph's Monastery, followed by parishioners of Infant Mary Church in Bajjodi, the Secular Carmelites, the Bethany Sisters from the Provincial Community in Vamanjoor, and Fr Rudolph Raj Pinto, national secretary of the Liturgical Commission.
Special Focus on Children and Upcoming Events
In alignment with the Diocesan Year of Children, a special hour of adoration is being conducted by children, highlighting the inclusive nature of the programme. The event features diverse forms of prayer to cater to the spiritual needs of all attendees.
The adoration will continue on April 1, with a Taizé prayer scheduled for 7 pm, followed by the concluding benediction and blessing at 9 pm. The event will culminate in a Thanksgiving Mass presided over by Fr Deep Fernandes, delegate provincial to the Secular Carmelites, bringing the 40-hour spiritual journey to a close.
