Mahashivratri Draws Nearly Nine Lakh Devotees to Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The sacred city of Varanasi witnessed an extraordinary spiritual gathering as Mahashivratri celebrations continued into their second day. On Monday, thousands of devotees flocked to the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple, forming long queues to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. By late evening, the cumulative footfall had soared close to an impressive nine lakh, highlighting the festival's immense popularity and religious significance.
Uninterrupted Darshan and Record-Breaking Numbers
In a special arrangement, the sanctum sanctorum doors were opened at 3:30 AM on Sunday for Jharokha Darshan, enabling pilgrims to enter without interruption for nearly 44 hours. According to Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, the temple's CEO, a staggering 8,78,616 devotees had offered prayers by 5 PM on Monday, with many more joining the queues as the evening progressed.
Official statistics reveal the scale of devotion: from 3:30 AM to 11:59 PM on Sunday alone, approximately 6.37 lakh worshippers entered the temple. From midnight until 5 PM on Monday, an additional 2,41,007 pilgrims paid their respects, contributing to the near-record total.
Easing Crowds and Reduced Waiting Times
Following the peak of Mahashivratri festivities, which extended into the late night on city roads, the pressure on routes leading to the temple gradually subsided. This resulted in significantly shorter queue lengths, allowing pilgrims from Monday morning to reach the temple without enduring long waiting hours outside the Kashi Vishwanath Dham area.
Influx from Magh Mela Adds to Devotee Numbers
Officials noted that a substantial portion of Monday's queues comprised pilgrims returning from the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. These devotees chose to pass through Kashi to seek blessings after Mahashivratri, further boosting the temple's footfall and enriching the spiritual atmosphere.
The seamless management and dedicated efforts by temple authorities ensured a smooth and reverent experience for all visitors, underscoring Varanasi's status as a premier pilgrimage destination during major Hindu festivals.
