Phulkari Annual Gala Night Celebrates a Decade of Empowering Women in Amritsar
The vibrant city of Amritsar recently played host to a prestigious event as Phulkari-Women Of Amritsar, a dynamic women's collective, organized its Annual Gala Night. This special occasion marked the 10th anniversary of the organization, which has been at the forefront of supporting social initiatives, including a crucial Cervical Cancer campaign in Punjab. The evening was a grand celebration of female achievement, featuring award ceremonies, leadership transitions, and cultural performances.
Women of Substance Awards Recognize Excellence
At the heart of the gala were the Women of Substance awards, designed to honor exceptional women who have demonstrated outstanding achievements, leadership, and commitment across diverse fields. The awards highlighted two luminaries who have made significant contributions to their respective domains.
Mira Nair, the acclaimed filmmaker and Academy Award nominee, was one of the distinguished awardees. Renowned for her visually rich and life-affirming films, Nair's career has been marked by numerous accolades. She won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature, Salaam Bombay in 1988, and followed it with groundbreaking works like Mississippi Masala in 1991. Her achievements include the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Hysterical Blindness in 2001, and the international hit Monsoon Wedding in the same year, for which she became the first woman to win the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The second awardee was Arvinder Kaur Dhaliwal, an eminent Punjabi writer and translator with a prolific portfolio of published works. Internationally recognized for her literary criticism in drama and theatre, as well as her compelling short story collections, Dhaliwal has also made significant contributions through translations, notably with Anna Bhau Sathe, a major work in her repertoire.
Inspiring Stories and Leadership Transition
In addition to the main awards, Phulkari honored three inspiring individuals with the Meri Kahaani Meri Zubani awards. These recipients included entrepreneur Prerna Khurana, Sandhya Sikka, and Muskaan Aggarwal, all of whom have pioneered women-led businesses in Amritsar, showcasing entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.
The evening also featured a significant Change of Guard ceremony, symbolizing the organization's ongoing evolution. Meenakshi Khanna, the outgoing president of the Managing Committee for 2025-26, formally handed over responsibilities to the incoming leadership, led by Kavita Kahlon. This transition underscored Phulkari's commitment to continuous growth and community engagement.
Cultural Extravaganza and Community Impact
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the gala included a musical performance by Sudeep Jaipurwale, an artist closely associated with the legendary AR Rahman. This cultural segment enriched the event, blending entertainment with the celebration of women's empowerment.
Phulkari-Women Of Amritsar has consistently worked towards uplifting women through various social initiatives, with a particular focus on health campaigns like the Cervical Cancer awareness drive in Punjab. The Annual Gala Night not only recognized individual accomplishments but also reinforced the collective's mission to foster leadership and positive change in the region.
