In a momentous achievement for Nagpur's artistic community, over fifty talented dancers from the city's esteemed Shreekrishna Nrithalayam have earned the prestigious opportunity to perform the classical dance form Mohiniyattam at the Republic Day Parade 2026. The performance will take place at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, marking a significant cultural milestone for the institution and the region.
A Grand Stage for Classical Artistry
The students are set to present the "Dance of the Enchantress" during the national celebrations on January 26, 2026. This performance will unfold in the august presence of President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and distinguished chief guests Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The event promises to be a spectacular showcase of India's rich cultural heritage on an international platform.
Part of a National Cultural Tapestry
The Mohiniyattam presentation forms an integral part of a grand cultural tableau that will involve approximately 2,500 artists from across the country. This massive artistic endeavor has been meticulously curated under the central theme "Svatantrata Ka Mantra – Vande Mataram". The theme beautifully reflects India's journey of freedom while simultaneously celebrating the nation's diverse artistic and cultural traditions. It serves as a powerful reminder of the unity in diversity that defines the Indian ethos.
Rigorous Preparation and Artistic Excellence
Selected students have undergone intensive training and rehearsals beginning January 13 to prepare for this high-profile national event. Their choreography has been carefully designed to highlight the subtle expressions, lyrical movements, and inherent grace that define Mohiniyattam. This classical dance form, deeply rooted in Kerala's cultural heritage, is known for its elegance and spiritual depth. The dancers' preparation focuses on capturing the essence of this art form with precision and authenticity.
National Recognition and Institutional Pride
The selection was made by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi, a recognition that places the Nagpur-based institution on a prestigious national platform. Prameela Unnikrishnan, director of Shreekrishna Nrithalayam, expressed immense pride in this achievement. She stated that the honor reflects years of dedicated training and unwavering commitment by both students and instructors. "It is an extraordinary privilege for us to represent Mohiniyattam at an event of such magnitude. I appreciate the dedication shown by the students during rehearsals. We look forward to presenting the spiritual depth of this art form before the nation's leadership and distinguished guests," she said.
This selection not only highlights the artistic prowess of Nagpur's dancers but also underscores the growing recognition of classical dance forms from various regions in national celebrations. It serves as an inspiration for young artists across the country, demonstrating that dedication to traditional arts can lead to opportunities on the grandest stages.
