The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is preparing to host the much-anticipated Bougainvillea Festival 2026 on March 14 and 15 at the Central Lawn of its historic Botanic Garden in Lucknow. This year's festival promises to be a distinctive celebration, transforming into a dedicated flower show where the public can showcase their home-grown bougainvillea collections and compete for prestigious prizes.

Festival Schedule and Visitor Information

The two-day event will welcome visitors with specific timings to ensure ample opportunity for participation and enjoyment. On Saturday, March 14, the festival will be open from 12 noon to 5:30 PM, while on Sunday, March 15, hours will extend from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. This schedule allows for flexible attendance, catering to both weekend enthusiasts and dedicated horticulturists.

Showcasing Six Decades of Botanical Excellence

Ajit Kumar Shasany, Director of NBRI, emphasized the institute's long-standing commitment to bougainvillea conservation and development, which began in the 1960s. "NBRI's bougainvillea collection has been meticulously developed and conserved since the 1960s," Shasany stated. "The festival will showcase a wide range of varieties, including newly developed types, alongside displays featuring vibrant colour palettes, distinctive forms, bonsai specimens, and topiary creations."

Competitive Categories and Prize Structure

The festival has announced competitive categories open to individuals, institutions, and nurseries, encouraging broad participation. Entries will encompass diverse displays such as:

  • Single-pot exhibits of different colored bougainvillea
  • Multi-grafted varieties showcasing hybrid techniques
  • Variegated leaf types highlighting genetic diversity
  • Bonsai and topiary creations demonstrating artistic horticulture

Shasany detailed the recognition for participants: "Certificates will be given to all participants, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes awarded in all classes. The overall winner will receive the prestigious Director General's Trophy."
