Odisha's Tourism Department Hosts Grand Pakhala Parba to Celebrate Iconic Summer Delicacy
In a vibrant celebration of Odisha's rich culinary heritage, the state's tourism department organized a state-level 'Pakhala Parba' in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. The event aimed to popularize pakhala, the iconic summer delicacy, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declaring that the dish is far more than mere food—it is an inseparable part of Odisha's culture and tradition.
Chief Minister Majhi's Vision for Global Recognition of Odia Cuisine
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, CM Majhi outlined the primary objective of Pakhala Divas. "The main goal is to elevate Odia cuisine to the global stage and unite Odias worldwide," he stated emphatically. "We must ensure that our traditional foods are not overshadowed by the pervasive influence of western food culture." He passionately recalled his personal childhood connection with pakhala, highlighting its deep-rooted significance in everyday life and religious practices.
Majhi elaborated on the dish's sacred associations, noting, "This is not just sustenance for the economically disadvantaged; it is also a cherished offering to Mahaprabhu Jagannath." He pointed out that tanka torani and pakhala bhog are regularly presented at Shrimandira, symbolizing the purity and inherent value of a simple, sustainable lifestyle. The Chief Minister's remarks underscored pakhala's role as a spiritual and cultural touchstone for the Odia community.
Pakhala: A Zero-Waste Food with Probiotic Benefits
In his speech, CM Majhi also championed pakhala as a "zero waste" food, emphasizing its environmental sustainability. He delved into the dish's health advantages, particularly its probiotic properties. "The beneficial bacteria naturally present in pakhala play a crucial role in eliminating harmful bacteria from the human body," he explained, advocating for its nutritional value alongside its cultural importance.
The Chief Minister proudly announced that World Pakhala Divas has transcended regional boundaries to become a global phenomenon. "This celebration is no longer confined to Odisha alone," he declared. "Odias residing across India and in foreign nations now observe this day with immense pride and joy." He described pakhala as a powerful medium that connects the widespread Odia diaspora with their ancestral roots, fostering a sense of unity and identity.
Government's Commitment to Cultural Preservation and Modern Development
On this auspicious occasion, CM Majhi expressed heartfelt gratitude to the farming community, whose labor makes such traditions possible. He issued a compelling appeal to the younger generation, urging them to comprehend and cherish the value of Odia traditions. "While embracing progress in our rapidly evolving world is essential, maintaining a strong connection to our cultural roots is equally vital," he advised, striking a balance between modernity and heritage.
Majhi further revealed that Pakhala Divas has been integrated into the government's ambitious 'Viksit Odisha' vision. This strategic initiative aims to propel the state towards modernity while meticulously preserving its ancient culture and heritage for future generations. Global Participation and Record-Breaking Culinary Feats
The Pakhala Parba featured extensive global engagement, with CM Majhi interacting via video conferencing with Odia communities living in Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Singapore, and across 15 Indian states. This digital outreach highlighted the event's international resonance and the widespread enthusiasm for Odia culinary traditions.
In a notable segment of the program, the Chief Minister felicitated several distinguished chefs who have been instrumental in promoting Odia cuisine at both national and international levels. Their contributions were acknowledged as pivotal in bringing regional flavors to a broader audience.
A major highlight of the celebration was an ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Record. The tourism department prepared a colossal 1,177-kilogram pakhala, utilizing 850 kilograms of rice. This monumental dish was later distributed to over 2,000 underprivileged individuals, embodying the spirit of community and generosity.
Prior to the main event, CM Majhi, accompanied by other dignitaries, visited an Odia food fair at Panthanivas. There, he expressed admiration for the preparation of approximately 326 diverse varieties of traditional Odia dishes, showcasing the incredible depth and variety of the state's culinary landscape.
