Far from the traditional cultural hubs of Chennai and Kolkata, the ancient art of Bharatanatyam is flourishing in the American South, thanks to the dedication of a Georgia-based dancer. Parama Roy Bardhan has emerged as a powerful cultural ambassador, weaving a story of resilience, passion, and an unyielding commitment to India's artistic legacy on international platforms.
A Lifelong Passion Interrupted
Parama's tryst with Indian classical dance began at the tender age of four. She immersed herself in rigorous training under the guidance of her gurus, Sri Pradipta Niyogi and Smt. Anuradha Niyogi, mastering both Kathak and Bharatanatyam for an impressive fourteen years. Her dream was always to pursue dance professionally. However, life presented a harsh turn when a family tragedy coupled with financial constraints forced her to put her passion on hold.
The Phoenix Rises in Georgia
A decade passed as Parama charted a different course. She earned a degree in electrical engineering, got married, and relocated to the United States. Yet, the call of the arts remained strong. Amid her new responsibilities, a deep-seated desire to reconnect with her roots ignited. Through consistent dedication and disciplined practice, she accomplished a remarkable feat, rebuilding her skills to a professional level in just five years.
Today, she is a celebrated figure on Georgia's cultural scene. Her charismatic stage presence and expressive artistry captivate audiences from all backgrounds, making Indian classical dance accessible and mesmerizing to a global viewership.

Nurturing the Next Generation

Here, she instills in young learners not just the grammar of Bharatanatyam, but its core values of discipline and spirituality.
"Dance is not just movement—it’s discipline, identity, and devotion," Parama emphasizes, a philosophy that forms the bedrock of her teaching. Her school has become a cultural anchor for Indian families seeking to preserve their heritage through classical art.
Looking ahead, Parama remains driven by a clear and profound vision: to preserve the purity of Indian classical dance while sharing its beauty with the world. Every performance she gives, every student she mentors, strengthens the vibrant tapestry of Indian arts in the United States, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
