Patna Heritage Walk Marks World Heritage Day with Focus on Dutch-Era Structures
The INTACH Patna chapter organized a heritage walk on Saturday to commemorate World Heritage Day, drawing attention to the city's rich architectural legacy. The event, which spanned from Patna College to the NIT building, emphasized the urgent need for conservation efforts.
Expert Insights on 400-Year-Old Dutch Architecture
During the walk, retired professor Wasi Ahmad, aged 90, addressed participants about the 400-year-old Dutch structure at Patna College. He detailed the unique construction materials used, including a mixture of lime, crushed brick, fenugreek, and sugar cane juice, which have contributed to the building's durability.
Ahmad highlighted the architectural design features, such as high ceilings, that help regulate indoor temperatures in alignment with Patna's local climate. He noted that the teak wood used in staircases and windows has remained intact over four centuries, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era.
Calls for Systematic Documentation and Government Action
Professor Ahmad urged INTACH to undertake systematic documentation of heritage sites through photography and videography to preserve records for future generations. This initiative aims to safeguard the city's architectural heritage from further degradation.
Bhairab Lal Das, convener of the INTACH Patna chapter, flagged off the walk and discussed the historical significance of the route. Shiv Kumar Mishra, co-convener of INTACH Bihar state, emphasized the need for the government to formally classify historically and archaeologically significant buildings as protected heritage sites to ensure their preservation.
