Prayagraj's Magh Mela Sees Record 3.56 Crore Devotees on Basant Panchami
Prayagraj: 3.56 Crore Devotees Take Holy Dip on Basant Panchami

In a spectacular display of faith and devotion, Prayagraj witnessed an extraordinary gathering as over 3.56 crore devotees, including revered seers, dedicated kalpvasis, and pilgrims from across the nation, took a sacred bath at the Triveni Sangam on Friday. This marked the fourth main snan of Basant Panchami during the ongoing Magh Mela, with participants undeterred by the challenging icy winds that swept through the region.

Record-Breaking Footfall at Magh Mela 2026

The cumulative number of bathers since the commencement of the Magh Mela has now astonishingly surpassed the 15 crore mark. With 23 days still remaining in the religious festival, the footfall is poised to establish unprecedented new records, reflecting the enduring spiritual significance of this ancient gathering.

A Day of Spiritual Immersion

From the early hours of dawn, devotees immersed themselves in the divine confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers. Each holy dip was undertaken as a profound step toward accruing spiritual merit and purification. The air resonated with the powerful chants of Vedic mantras and the soulful strains of devotional music, creating a breathtaking tableau that vividly testified to the vibrancy and deep-rooted devotion inherent in Sanatan culture.

The meticulous arrangements orchestrated by the mela police and administration ensured robust security and safety for all attendees. Consequently, Magh Mela 2026 has transcended its role as a mere religious congregation; it now stands as a powerful symbol of unity and the immense spiritual strength that characterizes Sanatan society.

Hour-by-Hour Devotee Count

The sacred bathing ritual vividly showcased the rich cultural and spiritual landscape along the banks of the Ganga throughout the entire day. The devotee count escalated impressively as the hours progressed:

  • By 8 am, over 1.04 crore devotees had taken the holy dip.
  • The number rose to 1.4 crore by 10 am.
  • By 12 noon, it reached 2.1 crore.
  • At 2 pm, the count was 2.9 crore.
  • By 4 pm, it climbed to 3.2 crore.
  • Finally, by 8 pm, the total reached 3.56 crore.

Unwavering Security Measures

An impenetrable security framework was implemented to guarantee the safety of devotees across all 24 ghats during the snan. Senior police officials conducted personal, on-ground monitoring of the arrangements, ensuring seamless crowd management and facilitating a peaceful, spiritually enriching experience for everyone present.

In a conversation with TOI, SP (Magh Mela) Neeraj Pandey remarked, "This Basant Panchami recorded one of the highest volumes of crowd in the past few years." He further confirmed that the fourth main snan of Basant Panchami concluded peacefully, with no untoward incidents reported.

Devotees Share Their Experiences

A significant number of devotees from southern states were observed fully immersed in the vibrant colors of Indian culture and tradition as they performed their holy ablutions at Triveni Sangam. Hiren Patel, a devotee hailing from Gujarat, described the Magh Mela experience as unique and unforgettable, stating, "I took a holy dip just a few minutes ago, and it feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Uday Ghate, a visitor from Madhya Pradesh who took the dip with his wife, characterized the experience as divine. He expressed, "This is truly a wonderful experience. The atmosphere of Magh Mela is beyond words. The arrangements and facilities here are outstanding."

Enhanced Facilities and Digital Engagement

The establishment of a no-vehicle zone allowed devotees to move freely and comfortably. Following their snan, many were seen engaging in acts of charity and making religious offerings, further enriching the spiritual ambiance. The digital dimension of the annual gathering also sparked immense enthusiasm, with numerous attendees eager to capture and preserve their unforgettable experiences through photographs and videos.

Notable Absence Amidst Celebrations

In a contrasting development, Swami Avimukteshwaranand chose not to proceed towards Sangam to take the holy dip on Basant Panchami, amidst an ongoing tussle with the Magh Mela administration. No official from the administration approached to persuade him to participate in the sacred ritual. Consequently, he remained seated in his vehicle outside his camp at the Magh Mela.

Shailendra Yogiraj, the national spokesman for Swami Avimukteshwaranand, indicated that the seer's health had deteriorated due to sitting outside in the cold for several days. It is noteworthy that the seer also abstained from taking a dip on Mauni Amavasya, following an incident where his palki was halted by Mela police and administration. Officials cited the no-vehicle zone policy as the reason, leading to a clash-like situation between the swami's disciples and the police.
