Nisha Lahiri, a devoted parishioner, highlighted the generational bond, saying, "My grandparents brought me here as a child. We want every note of the hymns to speak of hope and welcome." Such is the demand that families often arrive as early as 10 pm to secure their seats before the carols begin.
Logistical Preparations for Overflowing Congregations
The popularity of these services necessitates significant arrangements. At St Mary's Church in Camp, organizers confirmed that their traditional midnight service runs from 11 pm to around 12.30 am, centered on seasonal prayers. Precila D'Souza, a parishioner, explained the scale, "Extra seating and even screens are put up outside because there is a huge crowd. People arrive early to get a seat inside the church. We get families as well as friends who come to sing, pray, and be together."
Meanwhile, St Xavier's Church has been abuzz with activity for weeks. Brass bands and choir rehearsals have been in full swing to entertain the expected crowds. The festive cheer here begins showering on attendees as early as 9.30 pm with carols, seamlessly leading into the mass.
