Punjab Governor Calls for Preservation of Traditional Horse Breeds at Patiala Heritage Show
In a significant address at the three-day Punjab Horse Breed Heritage Show in Patiala, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria underscored the urgent need to preserve and promote the traditional Punjab breed of horses, a vital part of the region's cultural heritage. While distributing prizes to winners, he highlighted the event's role in safeguarding this legacy for future generations.
Emphasis on Heritage and Youth Engagement
Congratulating Professor Sumaer Singh Sira for successfully organizing the event, Governor Kataria stated that such shows are crucial not only for preserving heritage but also for familiarizing the younger generation with the indigenous Punjab horse breed. He stressed that understanding our past is essential for protecting our present and future, making these initiatives invaluable.
Historical and Mythological Significance
Referring to historical and mythological references, including the Mahabharata, Ashwamedha Yagya, Maharana Pratap, and Shivaji, the governor noted that horses have been loyal human companions since ancient times, serving in both war and peace. He remarked that this was his first time attending such a horse show, which highlights India's glorious past where horse ownership symbolized strength and prestige. Additionally, he pointed out the continued use of horses by the Army and police forces to maintain law and order.
Concerns Over Extinction and Economic Aspects
Expressing concern, Governor Kataria warned that several horse breeds are gradually becoming extinct, necessitating strong efforts to preserve traditional breeds like the Punjab and Kathiawari. He praised the dedication of horse breeders, who care for their animals like children, and highlighted the economic potential of horse rearing. "It is a matter of pride that horses often protect and assist their caretakers, owners, and riders even at the cost of their own lives," he said. He added that while horse breeding has become an expensive passion, with some horses valued in crores of rupees, it remains a promising business.
Event Highlights and Organizer's Mission
The governor expressed great happiness after witnessing the show, which featured Punjab breed horses from across the state. The main organizer, Professor Sumaer Singh Sira, informed that their mission is to save the Punjab breed, and they are making every possible effort in this direction. The event showcased the beauty and heritage of these horses, reinforcing the importance of such initiatives in cultural preservation.
