Puri Gajapati Seeks PM's Intervention Against Iskcon's Off-Calendar Rath Yatras

In a significant development concerning religious traditions, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingha Deva has formally written to the Prime Minister of India, seeking urgent intervention against the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) for organizing what he terms as "off-calendar" Rath Yatras at multiple locations worldwide. The Gajapati, a key custodian of the Jagannath Temple traditions, has raised serious concerns over alleged deviations from the sacred rituals and calendar of the Puri temple.

Allegations of Ritual Deviation

The matter was prominently discussed during a crucial meeting of the ‘Aikya Sthapana Mandali’, which convened at the office of the Jagannath Temple administration under the chairmanship of Gajapati Divyasingha Deva on Saturday. Addressing a press conference following the meeting, the Gajapati emphasized that Iskcon's proposed celebrations starkly deviate from the established traditions of Puri. He highlighted that, according to online information, approximately 80 "off-calendar" Rath Yatras and 10 Snana Yatras are likely to be organized globally before December.

Religious scholars, including Nischalananda Saraswati, have strongly advised that the Rath Yatra should strictly be observed on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya as per scriptural tradition, a point the Gajapati reiterated. He asserted that both the state and central governments bear a crucial responsibility to prevent such deviations from the authentic practices. The Gajapati revealed that he had personally written to the Prime Minister two days prior to apprise him of the gravity of the situation.

Potential Legal Action and Government Outreach

Expressing his frustration, the Gajapati stated on Saturday that if Iskcon proceeds with these "off-calendar" celebrations despite repeated requests to desist, legal action may be seriously considered. He further announced that the temple administration plans to escalate the issue by engaging with the Union ministries of culture and external affairs. Additionally, the authorities intend to write once again to the Iskcon-Mayapur leadership, urging them to align their activities with the traditional calendar.

Interestingly, the Gajapati Maharaja noted that Iskcon has already provided written assurance that it will not organize "off-calendar" Snana Purnima or Rath Yatra events within India. He confirmed that no such instances have been observed inside the country since 2025. However, the concern primarily revolves around international celebrations that could set a precedent conflicting with Puri's traditions.

Call for Awareness and Calendar Standardization

In his appeal, Gajapati Divyasingha Deva urged followers of Sanatan Dharma across the state to remain vigilant and aware of this issue, emphasizing the importance of preserving ritual integrity. Meanwhile, the meeting also resulted in a pivotal decision regarding the standardization of temple calendars.

It was unanimously decided that the Jagannath Temple calendar will officially come into effect from the upcoming Pana Sankranti. Furthermore, all temples dedicated to Lord Jagannath across India are expected to follow the rituals and festivals as per the calendar of the original seat in Puri, ensuring uniformity and adherence to tradition.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including temple chief administrator Aravinda Padhee and other members of the administrative body, underscoring the collective resolve to address these concerns.
