Ahmedabad: A 69-year-old woman living alone in the Satellite area has alleged that two housekeeping workers hired through a cleaning service agency stole gold jewellery worth Rs 3.7 lakh from her apartment while carrying out cleaning work. Satellite police have registered a theft case and launched an investigation.
According to the complaint, the victim, who resides in an apartment in Jodhpur village and works as a caretaker at a nearby paying guest accommodation, had contacted a cleaning service agency in Vastrapur on the recommendation of a relative to get her house cleaned.
Police said two men arrived at the residence on May 11 to carry out the cleaning work. At the time, the woman was away at work, while her daughter was present at the flat.
Investigators said one worker was cleaning the living room while the other was assigned to a bedroom. Taking advantage of being alone in the room, the suspect allegedly located the key to a locker kept on top of a wooden cupboard, opened it and removed valuables stored inside.
The stolen items included two gold chains with pendants and a rudraksha bracelet fitted with gold caps. The total value of the missing jewellery has been estimated at Rs 3.7 lakh.
After completing the work, the two workers were paid Rs 3,700 through an online transaction and left the premises. The theft came to light the following evening when the woman returned home and opened the locker to retrieve a pair of earrings. She then discovered that the jewellery was missing.
After searching the house and failing to locate the ornaments, the family approached Satellite police and lodged a complaint against the two unidentified cleaning workers.
