In a significant development for devotees across India, the revered Gundicha Temple in Puri is set to welcome visitors once again after remaining closed since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in 2020. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has announced the temple will likely reopen on December 1 on a trial basis.
Historical Temple Emerges From Pandemic Closure
The Gundicha Temple, celebrated as the birthplace of the sibling deities of the Jagannath temple, has been inaccessible to the public for most of the year, with devotees only permitted entry during the annual Rath Yatra festival. During this sacred event, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra reside at Gundicha temple for approximately one week.
Arabinda Padhee, chief administrator of SJTA, confirmed the reopening plans during an announcement on Wednesday. "We are planning to reopen Gundicha temple on December 1 on a trial basis," Padhee stated. "A detailed SOP will be released soon."
New Management and Visitor Facilities
Marking a significant operational change, the SJTA will now directly oversee temple operations rather than relying on private operators through tender processes as in previous years. This shift aims to ensure better management and visitor experience.
As part of the new arrangements, visitors will encounter several changes:
- An entry fee of Rs 10 per person will be implemented
- Children below five years, senior citizens above 80, and differently-abled pilgrims will be exempt from fees
- Winter operating hours (November-February): 6 am to 5 pm
- Other months: 6 am to 6 pm
- Wooden ramps and wheelchairs will enhance accessibility
Padhee personally inspected the shrine on Wednesday to review preparation progress for the anticipated influx of devotees.
Extensive Renovations and Future Development
Recent renovations have transformed the temple's appearance with comprehensive upgrades including stone cladding, professional landscaping, improved lighting systems, and enhancements to both the kitchen facilities and nata mandap. The temple walls will showcase beautiful murals depicting various aspects of Jagannath culture.
Puri district collector Dibya Jyoti Parida noted that encroachments around the temple complex have been successfully cleared, though he didn't clarify why the temple remained closed even after Covid restrictions were lifted in 2022.
Looking toward the future, Padhee revealed that a comprehensive master plan is currently in development for the temple's restoration and holistic development. Additional amenities including shoe stands, mobile phone storage facilities, and drinking water provisions will be available for devotees' convenience.

The Gundicha Temple holds profound historical and spiritual importance within Hindu tradition. Jagannath researcher Somanath Pujapanda explained, "Multiple fascinating legends surround the Gundicha temple's origins. One prominent narrative recounts how Queen Gundicha, wife of King Indradyumna, demonstrated exceptional devotion to Lord Jagannath."
According to tradition, Lord Jagannath was so moved by Queen Gundicha's profound dedication that he promised to visit her residence annually during the Ratha Yatra. Another legend designates this sacred space as the actual birthplace of the divine siblings, further cementing its spiritual significance.
The December 1 reopening marks a milestone moment for devotees who have awaited access to this sacred site beyond the limited Rath Yatra period. With improved facilities, enhanced accessibility, and renewed spiritual energy, the Gundicha Temple prepares to welcome pilgrims once again, reestablishing its position as a cornerstone of Odisha's religious landscape.
