Puri Jagannath Temple's Ratna Bhandar Inventory Commences After Nearly Five Decades
In a historic move, the inventory of the Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove) at the revered Puri Jagannath Temple in Odisha has officially begun, marking the first such comprehensive assessment in 48 years. This long-awaited process, initiated on March 23, 2026, is being conducted with advanced technological methods including videography and 3D mapping to ensure accuracy and transparency.
Strict SOPs Govern the Inventory Process
The inventory is being carried out under a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) approved by the Odisha state government. Key provisions of the SOP include:
- Only authorized personnel are permitted to participate in the inventory, ensuring security and minimizing disruptions.
- The work will be suspended on all major festivals, special religious occasions, and days with heavy footfall of devotees to respect temple traditions and avoid inconvenience.
- The use of modern techniques like videography and 3D mapping aims to create a precise digital record of the treasures stored in the Ratna Bhandar.
This meticulous approach underscores the government's commitment to preserving the sanctity and heritage of the temple while conducting a thorough evaluation.
Significance and Historical Context
The Ratna Bhandar, which houses invaluable jewels, ornaments, and offerings made to the deities over centuries, has not undergone a full inventory since 1978. The initiation of this process after nearly five decades is a significant event for devotees, historians, and the administration alike. It addresses long-standing demands for transparency and proper documentation of the temple's assets.
The inventory is expected to provide insights into the temple's rich cultural and historical legacy, while also ensuring better management and preservation of its treasures for future generations.
