The ongoing National Book Fair in Ranchi has become a major hub for bibliophiles, drawing crowds eager to explore a vast collection of literature. The event, taking place at the district school grounds, highlights a significant trend: a growing appetite among readers for works deeply connected to Jharkhand's identity and personal well-being.
Celebrating Jharkhand's Roots and Identity
Organisers have noted a remarkable surge in demand for books focusing on the state's unique history, culture, and tribal heritage. Chandra Bhushan, the managing trustee of Samay Publication, pointed out that volumes dedicated to Jharkhand’s revolutionaries, its 24 districts, indigenous tribes, and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) are selling exceptionally well. Illustrated books on local tourism, tradition, art, and cultural identity have also emerged as key attractions.
Publishers at the fair are witnessing specific interest in comprehensive, multi-volume works that delve into the state's tribal history, freedom movements, and regional identity. This shift indicates a move beyond standard textbooks. Birendra Kumar, state in-charge of Samay Prakashan, observed that readers are showing increased curiosity about the socio-cultural roots and historical narrative of their state, seeking a deeper understanding of their homeland.
A Fair for All: From Young Readers to Self-Improvement Seekers
The fair's appeal is broad and diverse. Alongside the niche interest in regional history, there is a parallel boom in the popularity of mental health and self-development literature, particularly among the youth. Stalls are also bustling with activity around popular works by noted authors, engaging children’s storybooks, timeless epics, inspiring biographies, and practical self-help titles, all recording brisk sales.
This dual trend was echoed by visitors like Divya Ojha, a customer, who expressed delight at finding so many historical and tribal culture books in one venue. She also highlighted the value of the mental health and self-help sections, noting they provide crucial guidance and help young people find balance in their daily lives.
Event Logistics and Participation
The 10-day literary festival is a joint initiative by Samay India and the Book Fair Committee. It boasts an impressive scale with more than 100 stalls representing over 50 publishers. The fair, which opened on January 26, will continue to welcome visitors until February 4.
