Ranchi's Christmas Eve: Churches, Markets Buzzing with Festive Spirit
Ranchi Celebrates Christmas Eve with Midnight Mass & Markets

As dusk fell and temperatures dropped in Ranchi, the warmth of Christmas celebrations took over the Jharkhand capital. Churches, main streets, and markets came alive with a vibrant festive spirit, drawing large crowds of devotees and revellers throughout Christmas Eve.

Churches Prepare for Midnight Mass

By evening, a steady stream of people began arriving at churches across the city. Hundreds of faithful gathered at the gates hours before the scheduled midnight mass, eagerly awaiting the celebration of the birth of Christ. Inside the churches, choirs filled the air with hymns and gospel music, while volunteers worked diligently to manage the entry of the large congregation expected later in the night.

"Christmas Eve is a time of prayer and waiting. We gather early to prepare our hearts before the birth of Christ is celebrated at midnight," said Maria Xalxo, who arrived with her family at St. Mary’s Cathedral church on Purulia Road.

Markets and Bakeries See Festive Rush

Beyond the churches, the entire city donned a festive look. Public spaces and neighbourhoods glittered with illuminated stars, decorative fairy lights, and Christmas trees. Stalls selling paper stars, Santa caps, fairy lights, and festive decor did brisk business throughout the evening as families shopped for last-minute decorations.

Bakeries and confectionery shops, particularly on Purulia Road, remained crowded. Revelers lined up to buy cakes and sweets for their home celebrations. Bakery owner Rakesh Kumar from Purulia Road explained the tradition: "Most families will attend the midnight mass first and then celebrate together by cutting cakes and sharing food."

Community Spirit Shines Through

The Yuletide spirit was not confined to just churches and markets. Public spaces and housing colonies across Ranchi joined in the celebrations with community decorations and small gatherings. The atmosphere was one of shared joy and peace.

"Christmas brings a message of peace and togetherness, and that feeling is visible everywhere tonight," said Preeti Mandal, a student who was out visiting city churches with her friends. The collective enthusiasm of the citizens transformed Ranchi into a glowing testament to the season's message of hope and community.
