In a crucial advisory ahead of the sacred Makaravilakku festival, the Ayyappa Baktha Sangam has made a fervent appeal to lakhs of devotees, particularly from Andhra Pradesh, to strictly follow all directives issued by the Kerala Police. The call emphasizes the need for a safe, orderly, and incident-free pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple.
Strict Caps on Pilgrim Numbers and Mandatory Bookings
The authorities have implemented a strict virtual queue system to manage the massive influx of devotees. Bookings have been capped at 35,000 pilgrims for January 13 and 30,000 pilgrims for January 14, the pivotal day of Makaravilakku. Officials have issued a clear warning that devotees arriving without a valid virtual booking will not be permitted for darshan. They stressed that unplanned arrivals could lead to severe safety risks and crowd management challenges.
Speaking from Vijayawada, Ayyappa Guru Swami Molli Venkata Ramana, a revered figure who has undertaken the Ayyappa Deeksha more than 18 times, reinforced the message. He cited specific instructions from Pathanamthitta District Police Chief Anand IPS. The Swami explained that these restrictions are not meant to hinder devotion but are essential measures to ensure pilgrim safety, effective crowd control, and robust emergency preparedness.
Detailed Travel and Trekking Restrictions for Key Days
Beyond the queue limits, the police and administration have laid down precise travel and trekking schedules that devotees must follow:
- Pilgrims will not be allowed to travel from Nilakkal to Pampa after 9 am on January 14.
- The trekking path from Pampa to Sannidhanam will be closed after 10 am on the same day.
- In a significant move, parking of vehicles at Pampa has been completely banned starting January 12.
These arrangements are being jointly implemented by the Kerala Police, the district administration, the Travancore Devaswom Board, and other allied departments to create a seamless framework.
Post-Darshan Planning and Appeals for Discipline
The Bhakta Samajam also addressed the crucial phase after the divine sighting. They have specifically urged devotees not to rush back immediately after the Makara Jyothi darshan. To facilitate a smooth return, adequate KSRTC buses have been arranged for phased transportation. This measure is designed to eliminate any need for panic or haste, ensuring everyone departs safely.
Emphasizing the core values of the pilgrimage, the Guru Swamis appealed for utmost discipline and cooperation from all Ayyappa devotees. They requested everyone to strictly follow police instructions and respect barricading arrangements. This collective effort is vital to prevent dangerous overcrowding and potential stampede-like situations, ultimately guaranteeing a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling Makaravilakku pilgrimage for all.
