Srirangam Temple Revives Summer Relief with Herbal Drinks and Cooling Mats
In response to soaring summer temperatures, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department has reinstated a vital tradition at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam. Starting Thursday, the temple is distributing herbal buttermilk and panakam, a traditional sweet drink, to provide respite for devotees during the intense heat.
Daily Distribution for Thousands of Visitors
With approximately 5,000 devotees visiting the temple each day, the initiative is strategically timed for peak noon hours. The drinks are being served near the Ranga Ranga gopuram, ensuring easy access for those navigating the temple complex. Officials have confirmed that this donor-supported program will continue until mid-June, aligning with the hottest period of the year.
Enhanced Comfort with Cooling Infrastructure
To further alleviate the discomfort caused by the heat, the temple administration has implemented additional measures. Jute mats have been laid along key pathways and corridors that connect the main shrine to various sub-shrines. These critical stretches include:
- The path between the Ranga Ranga gopuram and the Thaayar shrine
- Corridors leading to the Ranga Vilas Mandapam
- Routes near the Karthikai gopuram
- Pathways around the Chakkarathalvar shrine
During peak hours, these mats will be periodically sprinkled with water to maintain a cooling effect, enhancing the overall comfort for pilgrims.
Ensuring Adequate Supplies Amid Rising Temperatures
As temperatures in Trichy have surpassed 36°C, the temple administration is prioritizing the availability of refreshments. Adequate stocks of herbal buttermilk and panakam will be maintained, particularly between 11 am and 2 pm, when footfall is at its highest. This proactive approach aims to safeguard the well-being of all visitors, ensuring a more pleasant and safe worship experience during the sweltering summer months.
