Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Virtually Launches Grand Chola Museum Project
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Grand Chola Museum in Thanjavur on Friday through a videoconferencing ceremony. The museum, with an estimated cost of Rs 56.4 crore, is designed to comprehensively highlight the rich history, arts, culture, and global contributions of the illustrious Chola Empire.
Museum Location and Future Plans
The Grand Chola Museum will be constructed on a sprawling 50-acre site located within the Tamil University campus in Thanjavur. According to official sources, the state government has further ambitious plans for the campus, including the future installation of a monumental 120-foot-long statue of the revered King Raja Raja Chola, one of the empire's most celebrated rulers.
Project Timeline and Financial Approval
The proposal for this significant cultural institution was first announced in the Tamil Nadu state budget for the fiscal year 2023–2024. Following this announcement, the state tourism department formally issued an administrative order on February 29, 2024. Financial approval for the project was subsequently granted, with funds allocated during the financial year 2025–2026, paving the way for its commencement.
Architectural Design and Layout
The museum building will feature a total built-up area of 5,419 square meters spread across three distinct floors. The structure will reach an overall height of 22 meters, inclusive of its architectural domes. The entrance area will be equipped with a welcoming lobby and reception zone, complete with an information desk, ticket counter, and a souvenir shop for visitors.
Exhibition Galleries and Facilities
Ground Floor: This level will house an auditorium, a dedicated museum laboratory, storage areas, and specialized rooms for curators. The galleries here will display a wide array of exhibits focusing on:
- The emergence and early history of the Chola dynasty.
- Artefacts and inscriptions from the early Chola period.
- Models and murals illustrating the empire's promotion of multi-faith tolerance.
- Sections dedicated to revenue administration, naval prowess, and international trade networks.
First Floor: This floor will feature a state-of-the-art 3D theatre offering immersive virtual archaeological tours. It will also contain administrative offices, a comprehensive library, and a specialized research wing. The galleries on this level will emphasize:
- The architectural marvels and urban planning of the Cholas.
- Advanced water management systems and land administration practices.
- The empire's vibrant art, culture, societal structure, economy, and literary heritage.
Second Floor: Dedicated to artistic and diplomatic legacy, this floor will exhibit detailed replicas of iconic bronze sculptures and intricate temple models. The galleries will specifically focus on the extensive maritime trade networks and the foreign relations maintained by the Chola Empire, showcasing its global influence.
Event Attendees and Additional Inaugurations
The foundation stone-laying event in Thanjavur was attended by several dignitaries, including Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian, Thanjavur MLA K G Neelamegam, and Tiruvarur MLA Durai Chandrasekaran. In a separate ceremony on the same day, Chief Minister Stalin also inaugurated a new fire and rescue services station in Srirangam, constructed at a cost of Rs 4.8 crore. Additionally, he inaugurated an integrated commercial taxes department office near Cantonment, built with an investment of Rs 26.4 crore.
