Suket Devta Fair Inaugurated in Sundernagar with Grand Procession
The state-level Suket Devta Fair has officially commenced in Sundernagar, located in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. The inauguration ceremony was led by Nagrota Bagwan MLA Raghubir Singh Bali, who also serves as the Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC). The event marks a significant cultural and religious gathering, drawing attention from across the region.
Historical and Cultural Significance of the Fair
MLA Bali emphasized the deep-rooted historical importance of the Suket Devta Fair, which traces its origins back to the princely era. He noted that the fair is held on sacred land associated with sage Shukdev, making it a central hub for faith and tradition. Bali highlighted that such events are crucial for preserving the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh and fostering communal harmony among diverse communities.
In his address to a large gathering, Bali stated that fairs and festivals in the state are renowned for their uniqueness, reflecting a deep cultural legacy. The Suket Devta Fair, celebrated since ancient times, traditionally witnesses the assembly of various deities from the former Suket princely state. This year's edition holds special significance due to the arrival of the revered deity, Garhpati Nag Chawasi Sidd, from the Mahog area of Karsog subdivision, after an absence of nearly 180 years.
MLA Bali's Participation and Announcements
Bali actively participated in the festivities, offering prayers to local deities and performing traditional rituals at Shukdev Vatika. He then joined a grand religious procession that moved from Shukdev Vatika to Jawahar Park, where the ceremonial flag of the fair was hoisted, officially declaring it open. During the event, Bali extended best wishes on behalf of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the state government, acknowledging the participation of thousands of devotees alongside local deities as a testament to the strength of Himachal's traditions.
He stressed the importance of safeguarding these cultural practices for future generations, describing them as foundational to the state's identity. Bali also announced a grant of Rs 51,000 for the Suket Sarv Devta Committee to support the fair's activities and ensure its continuity.
Broader Implications and Tourism Development
Bali pointed out that festivals like the Suket Devta Fair bring energy and unity to society, expressing shared beliefs, values, and aspirations. He encouraged active public participation in such events, noting that they introduce visitors from other states to Himachal's unique "Dev culture" and contribute to strengthening the local economy. Additionally, he expressed satisfaction that traditional customs are being diligently followed, preserving the essence of the region's heritage.
On the tourism front, Bali mentioned that the state government is working to revive closed hotels under the Tourism Department. He also highlighted the development of the Shiv Dham Mandi project as a major tourist attraction, with a tender worth Rs 33 crore already issued to enhance infrastructure and visitor experiences.
Official Welcome and Community Involvement
Earlier in the event, Sundernagar SDM Amar Negi, who chairs the Fair Committee, welcomed MLA Bali as the chief guest and extended greetings to all participants. The fair's inauguration saw a vibrant display of local traditions, with the procession and rituals drawing widespread attention from devotees and onlookers alike.
The Suket Devta Fair continues to be a pivotal event in Himachal Pradesh's cultural calendar, blending religious devotion with community engagement. Its revival and the historic return of deity Garhpati Nag underscore the enduring legacy of the region's traditions, promising to attract more visitors and bolster cultural preservation efforts in the years to come.
