Sunyatee International Foundation Makes Strides in Ancient Sutra Restoration
The Sunyatee International Foundation (SIF), a Malaysia-based organization, has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing project to restore ancient sutras that were taken from Indian universities to China centuries ago. This initiative, led by Lim Siow Jin, a Malaysian citizen of Chinese descent and an alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur, focuses on reviving texts from historic institutions such as Nalanda and Takshashila.
Progress in Translation and Restoration Efforts
At a press conference held in Bodh Gaya on Tuesday, SIF director Rajesh Savera announced that a team of scholars, active since 2022, has successfully translated sutras from 84 verses of the Gita, along with Buddhist philosophy texts including Prajnaparamita, the diamond sutra, Agama sutra, Maa Annapurna sutra, and other ancient palm leaf manuscripts. Savera emphasized that this work aims to correct the misconception that ancient Indians lacked writing skills, a motivation behind founder Lim Siow Jin's project, who is also known as Dhyanacharya Nagajiva.
He clarified that the restoration process does not require government involvement, ensuring an independent approach. Mangesh Bhai, a former IAS officer who left his job to join SIF, detailed the technical aspects, noting that palm leaves sourced from Odisha and Telangana are used for laser printing, with these materials being waterproof and durable for over 1,000 years.
Accessibility and Outreach Initiatives
The translated sutras are being made available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and other Indian languages, with online access to facilitate wider dissemination. Concurrently, SIF organized its sixth mega camp in Bodh Gaya, targeting mental wellness for underprivileged communities. A large number of men, women, and children from surrounding areas participated in the event, which included meditation sessions aimed at promoting peace of mind.
Additionally, the foundation has been actively working to improve health outcomes for malnourished children, integrating wellness with educational and cultural preservation efforts. This dual focus on restoring historical texts and supporting community health underscores SIF's comprehensive approach to cultural and social development in the region.
