Tirumala's Grand Salakatla Vasanthotsavam: Spring Festival Celebrated Over Three Days

The sacred abode of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala is set to host the annual Salakatla Vasanthotsavam on a magnificent scale for three days starting Monday. This spring festival, traditionally observed in March–April during the Chaitra month, unfolds on Trayodasi, Chaturdasi, and Pournami each year, marking a significant spiritual event in the temple calendar.

Historical Origins and Ritual Significance

Temple legend traces the origins of Vasanthotsavam to the reign of King Achyutaraya in the 1460s, embedding centuries of tradition into the celebrations. The festival commences with ankurarpanam, the ceremonial sowing of nine seeds, on the day of the Uttarabhadra star. This is followed by a series of sacred rituals including punyahavachanam, vasthu santhi, and samprokshanam, performed exclusively by priests and not open to the public.

During the festival, the processional deities are given aromatic baths, known as Snapana Tirumanjanam, to provide relief from the seasonal heat. These holy baths utilize fragrant ingredients, symbolizing purification and divine care.

Three Days of Divine Celebrations

On all three days, Lord Malayappa Swamy and his consorts are brought to the beautifully decorated Vasanta Mandapam. Here, Snapana Tirumanjanam is performed on the first two days, immersing the deities in aromatic substances. The second morning features a spectacular parade of the utsava deities on the Swarna Ratham, a golden chariot, along the four mada streets to bless devotees.

The third day elevates the festivities with a grand procession that includes Sri Rama accompanied by Sita, Lakshmana, and Anjaneya, along with Sri Krishna alongside Rukmini and Satyabhama. They join Malayappa Swamy with Sridevi and Bhudevi in a majestic display of divine presence. The festival concludes with Snapana Tirumanjanam for all utsava murthies at the Vasanta Mandapam, culminating the spiritual observances.

TTD Announcements and Adjustments

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced the cancellation of several regular sevas on March 31 due to the festival. These include Kalyanotsavam, Unjal Seva, Arjita Brahmotsavam, Sahasra Deepalankara Seva, and Astadala Padapadmaradhana, ensuring focus remains on the Vasanthotsavam celebrations.

This annual event not only honors the arrival of spring but also reinforces the deep-rooted cultural and religious heritage of Tirumala, attracting devotees and observers from across the region to witness its grandeur and spiritual significance.
