Udupi Diocese Observes Maundy Thursday with Solemn Ceremonies

Christians across the Udupi diocese marked Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, with deep reverence to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles. The day was observed through special masses and symbolic rituals emphasizing service, love, and humility.

Milagres Cathedral Mass Led by Apostolic Administrator

At the Milagres Cathedral in Kallianpur, the Maundy Thursday mass was celebrated by Gerald Isaac Lobo, the apostolic administrator of the Udupi diocese. He was joined by Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, the rector of the cathedral and vicar general of the diocese. Also present were Fr Pradeep Cardoza, the assistant parish priest, and Fr Reginald Pinto, the director of Sampada.

In his homily, Bishop Lobo highlighted the significance of Holy Thursday, describing it as a profound symbol of the Lord's Supper, dedicated service, and unconditional love. He emphasized that this day transcends mere worship, serving as a special moment to embody and embrace core human values. "Holy Thursday is not just a day of worship; it is a special moment to live and embrace human values. Just as Jesus served by washing the feet of his disciples, we too should cultivate a humble attitude in our daily lives, helping others with kindness," he stated.

Foot Washing Ritual and Eucharistic Adoration

Following the message, Bishop Lobo performed the traditional foot washing ceremony, washing the feet of laypersons. This act recalled Jesus Christ's humble gesture of washing the feet of his 12 apostles, reinforcing themes of servitude and humility. After the mass, the Holy Eucharist was ceremoniously transferred to a florally decorated Altar of Repose. This reverential procession was followed by a period of adoration, allowing devotees to reflect and pray.

Connection to Good Friday and Broader Observances

Maundy Thursday precedes Good Friday, the day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. In Catholic churches, the Way of the Cross, which honors the Passion of Christ, stands as one of the most significant rituals during Good Friday ceremonies.

Special Observance at Thottam St Ann's Church

In Thottam St Ann's Church, the Last Supper was observed in a distinctive manner. Aligning with the Udupi diocese's declaration of the current year as the ‘Year of the Poor’, 12 special individuals from the Thottam parish were identified for recognition. Parish priest Rev Fr Denis D'Sa washed their feet, echoing the message of humility demonstrated by Jesus Christ.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Church Pastoral Council vice-president Leslie Aroza, secretary Lavina Fernandes, coordinator of the 20 Commissions Shanthi Fernandes, local convent superior Sister Sushma, and numerous devotees, all participating in the solemn observance.
