Uttarakhand's Traditional Holi Celebrations Illuminate Lucknow with Folk Songs and Colors
In a vibrant display of cultural heritage, members of the UP Parvatiya Mahaparishad gathered in Lucknow on Monday to celebrate Uttarakhand's traditional 'khadi' (standing) and 'baithki' (sitting) Holi. The event, held at their Gomtinagar office, transformed the space into a kaleidoscope of colors and melodies, drawing participants dressed in authentic attire.
Traditional Attire and Festive Greetings
Men adorned in crisp white cotton kurtas and women elegantly draped in sarees greeted each other with warm hugs, applying gulal that turned their clothing into a vibrant mix of pink, yellow, and green hues. This colorful exchange set the tone for a day dedicated to preserving and celebrating Uttarakhand's rich cultural traditions.
The 'Baithki' Holi Segment: Melody and Emotion
The 'baithki' Holi segment unfolded with women seated in semicircles, leading the gathering in soulful Kumaoni and Garhwali folk songs. Accompanied by traditional instruments such as 'dhol', 'tabla', 'dholak', and harmonium, the air was filled with melodic tunes and the lingering fragrance of 'abeer'. Singer Shanti Devi expressed the essence of this tradition, stating, "Baithki Holi is about melody and emotion. Though we sing while sitting, our hearts dance with every note."
The 'Khadi' Holi Segment: Rhythm and Dance
As part of the 'khadi' Holi, men joined in with energetic rhythmic claps, eventually breaking into coordinated dances that drew enthusiastic applause from onlookers. This dynamic segment highlighted the community's unity and joy, with participants moving in sync to the beats of traditional music.
Preserving Sacred Traditions
Mahendra Bisht, a participant, emphasized the significance of such celebrations, remarking, "When we celebrate Holi in the traditional way, it feels like preserving something sacred." This sentiment echoed throughout the event, as revelers engaged in age-old customs passed down through generations.
Traditional Cuisine and Community Bonding
To complement the festivities, attendees were served traditional Uttarakhand food, enhancing the cultural experience and fostering a sense of community. The combination of folk music, dance, and cuisine created a holistic celebration that honored the region's heritage while bringing people together in Lucknow.
This celebration not only showcased the beauty of Uttarakhand's Holi traditions but also served as a reminder of the importance of cultural preservation in today's fast-paced world.
