Kolkata Book Fair Accessibility Woes Persist for Wheelchair Users

Smooth access to the book stalls at the ongoing International Kolkata Book Fair has remained a significant challenge for persons with disabilities, particularly for visitors using wheelchairs. This persistent issue has been highlighted by members of the Wheelchair Users Association, who conducted an accessibility audit at the fair on Friday to evaluate whether the stalls were truly wheelchair-user-friendly.

No Improvement Since Last Year

Despite the installation of ramps to enter stalls from the lanes, association members reported that there has been no noticeable improvement in facilities compared to the previous year. Priyanka De of the Wheelchair Users Association expressed deep disappointment, stating, "We have repeatedly insisted to the guild that collapsible gates should be set up to allow us to enter stalls smoothly without facing hurdles or requiring assistance. However, the situation remains unchanged in most stalls, showing no progress."

Specific Accessibility Issues Identified

During their audit, the association members uncovered several critical problems:

  • At numerous stalls, the rails supporting collapsible gates were not properly embedded in the platform, creating obstacles that prevent wheelchair users from riding over them without help.
  • Many ramps were found to be uneven, making it difficult for wheelchair users to enter stalls independently.
  • The overall layout and gate arrangements continue to pose significant barriers to unassisted access.

Guild Acknowledges Problems, Promises Limited Action

Officials from the Publishers and Booksellers Guild acknowledged the issues raised by the association. A guild representative admitted, "There are indeed some problems as mentioned, and we will attempt to take corrective measures in as many stalls as possible over the next few days." However, they noted that while ramps have been installed at all stalls, their specifications do not fully align with the association's recommendations.

The official added, "We can rectify problems in some stalls, but addressing them comprehensively across all stalls presents challenges. We will instruct all decorators to keep these accessibility concerns in mind for future arrangements."

This ongoing situation underscores the broader need for consistent and thoughtful implementation of accessibility standards at public events in Kolkata, ensuring that cultural gatherings like the International Kolkata Book Fair are inclusive for all attendees.
