A new study by Rustic Pathways revealed wide price gaps on Airbnb for the 16 host cities of the tournament, with Kansas City hitting the top of the list as the most expensive. At the other end of the scale, accommodation is much cheaper in Mexico's host cities. The results highlight a growing divide in the cost of North American travel and may affect where fans decide to stay during football's biggest event.

According to the study, Kansas City leads all 16 host cities with an average Airbnb nightly rate of $539.95. That figure puts it well ahead of second-placed Vancouver, where the average cost stands at $461.52 per night. The gap becomes even more noticeable further down the rankings. Boston ranks third at $292.99, followed by Dallas at $251.19 and Seattle at $247.96. Several other major U.S. markets sit closer to the overall average, including Atlanta ($233.46), Miami ($230.00) and the San Francisco Bay Area ($220.93).
The research examined Airbnb listings across every city selected to host matches during the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026. While major sporting events often drive accommodation prices higher, the scale of the difference between cities stood out. Kansas City's average rate is more than double the tournament-wide average and nearly six times higher than the cheapest destination on the list.
The study found that the average Airbnb cost across all host cities is $228.21 per night. That benchmark places many American and Canadian locations above the overall average, while Mexico's host cities fall comfortably below it. For travelling supporters, Mexico appears to offer the strongest value. Guadalajara recorded the lowest average nightly rate at $89.06, making it the most affordable World Cup destination in the study. Mexico City followed at $131.66, with Monterrey close behind at $134.80. In fact, Mexico's three host cities occupied the bottom three spots in the rankings.
Toronto ($154.51) and Los Angeles ($155.81) rounded out the five least expensive host cities despite being among the continent's largest metropolitan areas. Rustic Pathways CEO Shayne Fitz-Coy noted that Mexico's host cities are considerably cheaper than the tournament average, while Canada's average host-city price sits well above that benchmark. He also observed that U.S. host cities, taken collectively, tend to cost more than the overall average.
