As dense winter fog continues to disrupt flight schedules across northern India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has significantly enhanced its operational readiness. The airport is proactively ensuring service continuity and efficiently managing potential flight diversions during the challenging winter season.
Proactive Infrastructure and System Checks
The airport, recognized as one of the few in the western region equipped for low-visibility operations, has undertaken comprehensive preparatory measures. In close coordination with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), all critical navigational aids and airfield lighting systems were meticulously serviced and calibrated before the onset of the fog season.
A recent calibration flight was successfully conducted for the new glide path at the southern end of Runway 05-23, a step that has further solidified the airport's technical preparedness. On-ground measures included refreshing all runway markings and conducting thorough checks of approach and runway lights to maximize visibility and safety.
Enhanced Diversion Management and Passenger Care
Ahmedabad airport has notably bolstered its capability to handle diverted flights. The airport operator has ensured that designated Code C aircraft stands are kept available at all times to accommodate unexpected traffic. This preparedness has already been put to the test, with the facility successfully managing over 90 diversions from nearby airports between December 2024 and October 2025.
To manage the increased passenger load during such disruptions, the airport has implemented several passenger-centric initiatives. Terminal seating capacity has been increased, and all food and beverage outlets are fully stocked. Staffing levels have been augmented across key areas, including security and landside operations, to manage crowding and parking efficiently during delays.
Contingency Planning Based on Data
The airport's strategy is data-driven. All stakeholders have been instructed to review and update their contingency plans based on three years of detailed fog forecasts and analysis provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This forward-looking approach aims to minimize inconvenience.
Additional manpower has been deployed to support seamless aircraft movement in reduced visibility conditions. Passengers will be kept informed in real-time through regular advisories issued on the airport's official digital channels, ensuring transparency and reducing anxiety during travel disruptions.
