In a major boost for Indo-UK connectivity and the Punjabi diaspora, Air India Express has officially resumed direct flights between Amritsar and London Gatwick, ending a four-year suspension that began during the pandemic.
A Much-Awaited Reconnection
The inaugural flight IX-179 received a ceremonial welcome at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, marking the restoration of a vital air bridge between Punjab and the United Kingdom. This route holds special significance for the substantial Punjabi community residing in Britain, many of whom have family ties spanning generations.
Flight Schedule and Operations
The service will operate three times weekly using modern Boeing 737-8 aircraft, configured with 186 economy and 8 business class seats. The current schedule is:
- From Amritsar (ATQ): Departures on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:45 AM, arriving London Gatwick (LGW) at 3:45 PM local time
- From London Gatwick (LGW): Return flights on the same days, departing at 5:45 PM and arriving in Amritsar at 7:45 AM the next day
Economic and Social Impact
This route resumption is expected to provide significant economic benefits to both regions. For Punjab, it means easier access for British tourists visiting religious sites like the Golden Temple, while UK-based Punjabis can now travel home more conveniently for family occasions and business ventures.
What This Means for Travelers
The direct connection eliminates the need for layovers in Delhi or Middle Eastern hubs, reducing total travel time by several hours. Early booking trends show strong demand from both leisure and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travelers, particularly ahead of the upcoming wedding and holiday seasons.
Air India Express has announced competitive introductory fares starting at ₹34,999 for round-trip economy class tickets, with special baggage allowances catering to the needs of diaspora travelers.
