Chennai Airport T1: No Restrooms for Arrivals, Passengers Struggle

Chennai Airport Terminal 1 Faces Restroom Shortage for Arriving Passengers

Passengers arriving at Terminal 1 of Chennai International Airport, along with their waiting relatives, are encountering a significant inconvenience: the lack of a basic restroom facility directly outside the arrivals exit. This issue forces individuals to seek alternatives, such as taking a lift to the departure level, walking to the nearby Aerohub mall, or heading to another terminal, all of which involve time-consuming and often stressful journeys.

High Footfall Without Essential Amenities

Despite Terminal 1 handling a substantial share of domestic arrivals, with approximately 30,000 daily footfalls, there are no restrooms conveniently located outside the exit. This omission creates practical challenges, especially for those with urgent needs or health conditions.

Passenger Experiences Highlight the Struggle

Aishvarya A P, a passenger, shared her recent ordeal when she urgently needed a restroom during her period. "Restaurant staff informed me that I had to go further outside, but re-entry into the terminal is not permitted once you exit. In such situations, it becomes particularly difficult for women," she explained, underscoring the gender-specific hardships.

Shri Sakthi, a frequent flyer, prefers using restrooms inside the terminal for safety but acknowledged that an external facility could be beneficial if well-maintained. "As a diabetes patient, access to restrooms is crucial. I usually carry nappies for emergencies," she said. She suggested that airports could adopt advanced technologies, like the self-sanitising lavatories used in countries such as Japan, to ensure hygiene.

Impact on Drivers and Visitors

S P Louis, a prepaid taxi driver, noted that the absence of a restroom near the T1 arrivals exit poses difficulties during emergencies for both men and women. "If we need to use a restroom urgently, we must take the lift to the departures level and walk from there, which is a lengthy process," he stated, highlighting the broader inconvenience beyond just passengers.

Delayed Inauguration of Plaza Facilities

Although a plaza constructed near the T1 arrival terminal includes toilets, its delayed inauguration renders these facilities currently inaccessible. Airport authority officials have indicated that the plaza will be inaugurated soon and attributed the lack of additional toilets to ongoing redevelopment work at the airport.

This situation underscores a gap in basic amenities at a key transportation hub, affecting thousands daily and calling for prompt resolution to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
