Darjeeling Administration and Hotel Groups Dismiss Voter ID Requirement Rumors for Tourists

In a move to protect the region's vital tourism sector, the administration in Darjeeling has officially dismissed widespread rumors that tourists must present voter identification cards while checking into hotels. Authorities are urging all visitors to rely solely on official information and avoid falling prey to misinformation that could disrupt travel plans and harm local businesses.

Hotel Associations Confirm No Such Directive Exists

Leading hotel associations in the area have stepped forward to clarify that no such directive requiring voter IDs has been issued. According to these groups, guests are free to check in using any valid identification document that contains a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Hoteliers have expressed concern that the spread of false information could negatively impact tourism, which has been showing signs of recovery in recent months.

Tourist Experience Highlights Confusion

Agnitra Sarkar, a tourist from Kolkata, shared his experience of being initially asked for a voter ID while checking into a hotel in Siliguri. "I was surprised when they insisted on a voter ID, citing SIR-related instructions. I questioned the rule and asked for an official notification. When they couldn't provide one, they eventually accepted my Aadhaar card," Sarkar recounted. This incident underscores the confusion caused by the rumors and the importance of verifying information with official sources.

Official Statements from Hotel Associations

The Greater Siliguri Hotel Owners' Association has firmly stated that there is no such regulation in place. Rajib Das, the association president, clarified, "There are no orders from either the administration or our association. This appears to be panic-driven by misinformation." Similarly, the Darjeeling Hotel Association (DHA) emphasized that they accept any valid ID with a PIN code and warned that such rumors could damage the industry's progress.

Tourism Recovery and Future Outlook

Despite the challenges posed by misinformation, the Darjeeling Hotel Association reported improved occupancy rates, with March seeing a rise to 65% from 45% in the previous year. Reggie Lama, DHA general secretary, noted, "April is also looking promising as queries are converting into bookings. However, such rumors could impact the industry. There is no rule requiring tourists to submit voter IDs. We accept any valid ID that has a PIN code." This positive trend highlights the resilience of Darjeeling's tourism sector, which officials hope to sustain by combating false narratives.

In summary, travelers to Darjeeling and Siliguri are advised to carry standard identification documents like Aadhaar cards, passports, or driver's licenses, as hotel check-ins do not require voter IDs. The administration and hotel associations continue to work together to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for all visitors, reinforcing the message to trust only verified information.
